Job summary

Fugro Malaysia Marine is seeking an experienced Senior Geophysicist to join our team. The Geophysicist (Remote Operations) will QC geophysical data during acquisition and interpret survey data in line with procedures and work instructions.

The role involves coordinating with offshore teams, client representatives, and technical leads to ensure project delivery and high-quality results across multiple geophysical disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree or higher in Geoscience (Geology or Geophysics).
  • Experience in offshore survey environments.
  • Proficiency with geophysical interpretation and data processing tools.
  • Programming skills (e.g., Python) would be advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication.

About the role

Fugro Malaysia Marine is seeking an experienced Senior Geophysicist to join our dynamic team. The Geophysicist (Remote Operations) is responsible for quality control during geophysical data acquisition and the interpretation of geophysical survey data, in accordance with documented procedures and work instructions. The role requires active communication with offshore survey teams, including Party Chiefs, Client Representatives and technical leads to ensure good working relationships and project delivery.

What you'll be doing

Solving complex problems where precedent may not exist by:

  • Performing complex geophysical work around the process of acquiring, collating, processing, interpreting and reporting of complete and high-quality geophysical data to provide accurate and customised data deliverables to clients
  • Providing geophysical advice in multiple specialised technical disciplines
  • Developing solutions to clients by putting acquired geophysical data into context
  • Proposing improvements of research methods and quality systems
  • Providing technical input for tenders
  • Assisting with the establishment and compilation of project procedures
  • Making recommendations, including any supplementary investigations
  • Contributing to acquisition activities and, data interpretations

The activities will be carried out on a rotational basis (e.g., three weeks on / three weeks off) for 12 hours / day. The shift will follow existing operations time patterns present at the ROC. The functional activities for this role include, but they are not limited to:

  • Ensuring that all work is undertaken to the highest quality and professionalism in accordance with the company Integrated Management System and project specific documentation
  • Identifying personal training needs, bring them to the attention of the department manager and to take full advantage of the training opportunities provided
  • Ensuring that all activities are carried out with the highest regard to the health and safety of all involved and to the protection of the environment and prevention of pollution
  • Monitor acquired data quality from survey vessels, liaise with and assist Party Chief and other survey staff, maintains survey logs from the Remote Operations Centre (ROC)
  • Interpret and integrate a variety of data and prepare reports in accordance with contractual specifications, Fugro standards and styles and Quality Assurance documentation, under supervision of Geoscience Team Leaders and Geo-Data Supervisors
  • Liaise with Fugro colleagues, clients and subcontractors as required
  • Prepare presentations to clients and others
  • Regularly reviews work processes to ensure best practice has been adopted, and assists with updating of documentation
  • Actively stays up to date with emerging technologies and interpretation methodologies, while proactively collaborating with Fugro’s regional champion for Marine Geophysics, Geo-data Digitalisation, and related working groups
  • Lead and assist with technical and organisational development activities
  • Ensure data security and integrity after acquisition and during reporting
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment
  • Supervise and assist in leading, training and coaching geophysical staff within the remote operations centre during data acquisition and field reporting
What we're looking for
  • Bachelor Degree or Education at Higher professional education or Academic higher education level; preferably in the field of Geoscience (Geology or Geophysics)
  • Experienced in offshore survey
  • Experienced user of common interpretation and data processing software packages in the industry such as Moga SeaView, Uniseis (or equivalent), Oasis Montaj, ArcGIS Pro, IHS Kingdom, GIS, etc
  • Programming capabilities (e.g., Python) would be an advantage
  • Highly proficient in English communication, written and verbal
  • Expert-level knowledge of geophysical field operations, data acquisition and interpretation, with strong understanding of Geotechnics, GIS, and Geology
  • Ability to train, mentor, and guide junior or less experienced Geophysicists to develop technical competencies
  • The candidate is expected to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Proven capability to manage and interact professionally with Fugro employees and subcontractors, both onshore (ROC) and offshore (vessel-based) environments
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and contribute effectively to technical discussions with internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Strong experience in supporting, reviewing, and ensuring the quality of offshore reporting and deliverables, meeting stakeholder requirements to a high professional standard
  • Preferably a member of registered Professional Geologist of Board of Geologists Malaysia
  • Candidates must have the right to live and work in Malaysia
