Job summary

Jora Malaysia is seeking an experienced R&D Manager to lead the cosmetics formulation team, overseeing development, testing, and optimization for client-driven products.

You will actively participate in mixing, batch scaling, and ensuring regulatory compliance, while maintaining thorough formulation records and collaborating with production for smooth operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum 1 year of managerial-level experience in a lab/ R&D setting.
• Prior cosmetics-related industry experience is preferred.
• Hands-on experience operating laboratory instruments (pH meters, balances, viscometers).
• Experience managing the full R&D lifecycle from concept to scale-up and mass production.
• Knowledge of ISO and GMP standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities in R&D contexts.

Responsibilities

• Lead the R&D team to create, test, and optimize cosmetic and skincare formulations tailored to client needs.
• Involve hands-on product mixing, batch compounding, and scale-up trial processes.
• Develop custom products aligned with customer requirements and specs.
• Maintain up-to-date product formulation records and documentation.
• Advise on artwork packaging descriptions, INCI lists, usage directions, and safety notes.
• Source and manage raw material documentation (MSDS/SDS, TDS, COA).
• Ensure all lab testing follows approved methods and regulatory standards.
• Manage inventory of lab consumables and raw materials to avoid stockouts.
• Identify, evaluate, and procure new lab equipment and instruments.
• Oversee maintenance, calibration, and SOP-driven checks for all instruments.
• Collaborate with Production Supervisor to ensure smooth batch scaling.
• Discuss production issues with GM to identify root causes and corrective actions.
• Mentor and train lab staff to uphold quality standards.

Job Description

• Hands‑on involvement in product mixing, batch compounding, and scale‑up trial processes.
• Develop custom products aligned strictly with customer requirements and technical specifications.
• Maintain complete, accurate, and up‑to‑date product formulation records.
• Advise on the accuracy and compliance of artwork packaging descriptions, including ingredient lists (INCI), usage directions, and safety warnings/precautions.
• Source, collect, and manage raw material documentation, including Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS), Technical Data Sheets (TDS), and Certificates of Analysis (COA).
• Ensure all laboratory testing procedures strictly follow approved standard methods and regulatory standards.
• Maintain inventory tracking for laboratory consumables and raw materials, managing timely repurchasing to prevent stockouts.
• Identify, evaluate, and procure new laboratory equipment and instruments for ongoing product development needs.
• Oversee preventive maintenance, verification, and calibration schedules for all laboratory instruments and equipment per SOPs.
• Manage equipment troubleshooting and ensure a steady inventory of essential spare parts.
• Partner with the Production Supervisor to verify that factory equipment and production processes run smoothly during batch scaling.
• Discuss production failures directly with the General Manager to investigate root causes, implement corrective actions, and execute long‑term solutions.
• Manage, mentor, and train laboratory subordinates to build technical competency and maintain quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of managerial‑level experience (candidates performing equivalent managerial responsibilities without a formal manager title are eligible).
  • Previous employment in a cosmetics‑related industry.
  • Hands‑on experience operating laboratory instruments, including pH meters, analytical balances, and viscometers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the full R&D lifecycle from conceptualization and prototyping to scale‑up and mass production.
  • In‑depth knowledge of industry standards such as ISO and GMP.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem‑solving ability in R&D contexts.
