Job description

Organizational and Management

Provide basic nursing care that aligns with the vision, mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives of the nursing services and the hospital. Notify the nursing leaders of any situations that impact the quality of care. Obtain the unit report and assignment at the beginning of each shift and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Unit Manager or Senior Registered Nurse.

Daily Routine in Operation Theatre

Perform thorough cleaning each morning, including sanitizing operating tables, lamps, and other equipment. Inspect supplies and gas cylinders to ensure safety and guarantee well‑stocked anesthesia machines. Transport patients from the ward to the induction room and assist until they are evaluated by an anesthetist. Transport patients to the operating room and assist in safe lifting onto the operating table. Adjust operating lights according to the surgeon's instructions and maintain the sterility and cleanliness of the operating theatre.

Transport patients to the recovery room and assist in their comfort. Conduct regular nursing rounds to assess patients’ needs and communicate with them and their families. Clean floors, operating tables, walls, and lamps, and disinfect the operating theatre (OT) and scrub room after each procedure. Conduct weekly cleaning of the entire unit to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Keep the unit, store, fridge, and its facilities clean and tidy. Collect pharmacy and surgical supplies from the pharmacy and the store as required to maintain adequate stock levels for operations. Answer phone calls and relay messages. Attend to patients' calls promptly. Ensure continuous supply of portable oxygen for emergency needs.

Assist trained staff in various aspects of basic nursing care, such as patient comfort, safety, nutrition, hygiene, transfer, dressing, intravenous lines, catheterization, etc. Clean and disinfect trolleys and instruments after use and store them properly. Record the daily charges for items used in the unit and update patients’ charges accordingly. Lift, turn, and position patients safely using correct body mechanics. Accompany consultants or anesthetists in performing procedures and participate in all activities in the operating theatre in the absence of trained staff.

Daily Routine in Central Sterile Supply Services

Receive and inspect returned sets from wards. Distribute sterilized sets on an exchange basis. Clean and dry various instruments. Inspect instruments for functionality and completeness of sets. Prepare and label sets for sterilization. Uphold cleanliness in workspaces, including sinks, tables, and trolleys.

Keep the linen store and stock areas tidy and well‑organized. Assist in inventory management for linen and instruments. Procure necessary solutions, tapes, sutures, and instruments from the store. Attend meetings held by the service.

Human Resource and Development

Proactively pursue learning and development, meeting the minimum requirement of 20 hours of continuing education per year. Orient new staff members to unit routines. Maintain a record of personal leave and training attendance.

Policies and Procedure

Adhere to the hospital's policies and nursing code of conduct, ensuring patient confidentiality and standard infection control practices are upheld.

Facilities and Equipment

Assist trained staff in managing the proper storage, condition, and availability of biomedical equipment in the unit. Maintain sufficient supply of ward stock and accurate records for equipment, medical supplies, and consumable items for specimen collections.

Safety and Quality Improvement Activities

Participate in new services, comply with 5S activities, patient safety policies, and adherence to ISO, MSQH, JCI, PSG, and NNA standards. Ensure compliance with patient safety goals and occupational safety measures. Adhere to the Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994, take reasonable care at work, cooperate with employers, wear proper PPE, and follow all safety and health instructions and measures.

Requirements

• Education: Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. Certified healthcare assistants will be a priority.
• Knowledge and Experience: Experience working in a hospital setting is an advantage.
• Special Skills: Able to converse fluently and write in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
• Personal Attributes: Interpersonal and communication skills, caring, honest, responsible worker. Willingness to work scheduled hours, shifts, weekends, public holidays, and any time called during an emergency.
