Job description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Provide basic nursing care in accordance with established standards, work collaboratively with team members, and report any incidents or issues to relevant authorities to ensure the delivery of high‑quality patient care.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide basic nursing care that aligns with the vision, mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of the nursing services and the hospital. Notify the nursing leaders of any situations that impact the quality of care. Obtain unit report and assignment at the beginning of each shift and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Unit Manager or Senior Registered Nurse.
2. Daily routine in Operation theatre:
   • Perform thorough cleaning each morning, including sanitising operating tables, lamps and other equipment.
   • Inspect supplies and gas cylinders to ensure their safety and guarantee a well‑stocked anaesthesia machine.
   • Transport patients from the ward to the induction room, and assist until they are evaluated by an anaesthetist.
   • Transport patients to the operating room and assist in safe lifting onto the operating table.
   • Provide assistance to the anaesthetist, adjust the operating light according to the surgeon’s instructions, and consistently maintain the sterility and cleanliness of the operating theatre.
   • Transport the patient to the recovery room and assist in their comfort.
   • Conduct regular nursing rounds to assess patients’ needs and communicate with them and their families.
   • Perform cleaning of floors, tables, walls, lamps and disinfection of the OT and scrub room after each procedure.
   • Conduct weekly cleaning of the entire unit to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
   • Keep the unit, store, fridge and its facilities clean and tidy.
   • Collect pharmacy and surgical supplies to maintain adequate stock levels for operations.
   • Answer phone calls and relay messages. Respond promptly to patient calls.
   • Ensure portable oxygen continuous supply for emergency needs.
3. Assist trained staff with various aspects of basic nursing care such as patient comfort, safety, nutrition, hygiene, transfer, dressing, intravenous lines and catheterisation. Clean and disinfect the trolley and instruments after use and store them properly. Record daily charges for items used and update patients’ charges accordingly. Lift, turn and position patients safely using correct body mechanics. Accompany the consultant or anaesthetist during procedures and participate in all activities in the operation theatre in the absence of trained staff.
4. Daily routine in Central Sterile Supply Services:
   • Receive and inspect returned sets from wards.
   • Distribute sterilised sets on an exchange basis.
   • Clean and dry various instruments.
   • Inspect instruments for functionality and completeness.
   • Prepare and label sets for sterilisation.
   • Uphold cleanliness in workspaces, including sinks, tables and trolleys.
   • Keep the linen store and stock areas tidy and well‑organised.
   • Assist in inventory management for linen and instruments.
   • Procure necessary solutions, tapes, sutures and instruments from the store.
5. Attend meetings held by the service.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Education: Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. Certified healthcare assistants would be a priority.
• Knowledge and experience: Experience working in a hospital setting is an advantage.
• Special skills: Fluency in speaking and writing English and Bahasa Malaysia.
• Personal attributes: Interpersonal and communication skills; caring, honest and responsible; willingness to work scheduled hours, shifts, weekends, public holidays and any time called during an emergency.
