Job description

We are looking for a molecular biologist with microbiology skills as well. The role will involve the development and optimisation of multiplex RT-PCR assays targeting selected genes of interest in Holothuria scabra as part of the development of a Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) screening approach for the breeding of an Elite Breeding Stock.

The role will also involve the investigation of Vibrio species associated with Skin Ulceration Disease (SKUD) in Holothuria scabra. Responsibilities may include bacterial isolation and culture, identification of relevant microorganisms, and antimicrobial assays.

The successful candidate will work as part of a research team and will receive guidance from senior scientists while progressively taking responsibility for experimental planning, laboratory work, data collection and analysis.

About the Company

Makami Sdn Bhd is a fully Malaysian-owned and managed startup venturing into the farming of tropical sandfish (Holothuria scabra), a high-value edible sea cucumber.

The company's headquarters is in Kuala Lumpur, with farming and hatchery operations in Johor. The company is supported by consultants with extensive experience in commercial hatchery production.

As an early-stage company, Makami is building its research, breeding and hatchery capabilities from the ground up. This provides the successful candidate with an opportunity to contribute directly to the development of molecular and microbiological research programmes and to take on increasing responsibilities as the company grows.

As a new startup, the company currently does not have a website. Further details about the company, research programme and operations will be provided only to candidates selected for interview.

Key responsibilities
Molecular Biology and Marker-Assisted Selection

Assist in the design, development, optimisation, validation, and execution of molecular assays for the study of genes and genetic markers of interest in Holothuria scabra.

Develop and optimise multiplex RT-PCR and other PCR-based assays for the simultaneous detection and analysis of multiple genetic targets.

Support the development of a Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) screening workflow for the identification and selection of desirable traits and the establishment of Elite Breeding Stock.

Perform nucleic acid extraction, including RNA extraction, DNA extraction, and RNA and DNA quality and quantity assessment.

Perform and optimise molecular techniques, including conventional PCR, RT-PCR, multiplex PCR, quantitative PCR (qPCR/RT-qPCR), and other relevant molecular and biochemical assays.

Design and optimise primers, assay conditions, reaction parameters, and experimental controls.

Perform assay validation, including assessment of specificity, sensitivity, reproducibility, and overall assay performance.

Troubleshoot experimental and technical issues and contribute for continuous improvement of laboratory protocols and workflows.

Microbiology and Vibrio Research

Conduct microbiological investigations involving Vibrio species associated with Skin Ulceration Disease (SKUD) in Holothuria scabra.

Perform bacterial isolation, culture, purification, and maintenance using appropriate microbiological techniques.

Assist in the identification and characterisation of Vibrio isolates using microbiological and molecular approaches.

Support studies investigating the role, diversity, and pathogenic potential of Vibrio species associated with disease outbreaks.

Maintain accurate records of bacterial isolates, samples, experimental procedures, and results.

Ensure appropriate laboratory practices are followed when handling microorganisms and biological samples.

Candidate wanted

The ideal candidate would have 2–3 years of relevant laboratory or research experience, but strong fresh graduates are also encouraged to apply (CGPA >3.5). Relevant experience may include an undergraduate Final Year Project (FYP), research project, laboratory assistant position, internship, or other hands-on laboratory work. The candidate should:

Hold a BSc or MSc in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biology, or a related life science discipline.

Have hands-on laboratory experience, particularly in molecular biology and microbiology.

Be able to communicate effectively and write well in both English and Bahasa Malaysia.

Be able to work effectively as part of a team while also taking initiative in the laboratory.

Be capable of following established experimental protocols and with appropriate guidance, developing and planning experimental procedures independently.

Demonstrate good laboratory practices, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new techniques,

Experience working with Vibrio species, aquatic microorganisms, environmental microbiology or aquaculture-related research would be an advantage.

Only Malaysian citizens will be considered for this position.

Starting salary will be in the range of RM2,500-RM3,500 per month, depending on qualifications and relevant experience, with EPF and SOCSO provided.

Upon successful completion of the 6-month probation period, a RM500 salary increment will follow.

As the company becomes commercially established, additional incentives and opportunities may be introduced as the business develops.

Future Prospects

As an early-stage aquaculture venture, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to take significant ownership of laboratory and research activities as the company's molecular, microbiological, breeding and hatchery programmes develop.

The role offers opportunities to broaden expertise across molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, aquaculture and applied research, with potential for increased responsibilities and career progression as the company grows.

Candidates who are motivated, adaptable and willing to contribute during the company's formative years will have the opportunity to play an important role in establishing its research and breeding capabilities.
