Qualifications

  • Basic Medical Degree recognised by MMC.
  • Full registration with MMC.
  • Valid Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
  • Minimum three years post-housemanship as a Medical Officer or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems.
  • Experience in oncology, haematology or internal medicine.

Job description

The Medical Officer (MO) supports Consultant Oncologists in delivering safe, effective and patient-centred oncology care, serving as their key clinical support in the day-to-day management, coordination and monitoring of patients.

The MO acts as the clinical anchor throughout the patient journey, providing day-to-day clinical oversight and care coordination across consultations, investigations, treatment, follow-up and supportive care services. The role is responsible for ensuring that patient care is well coordinated, treatment plans are implemented safely and accurately, and medical records, clinical documentation and care plans are completed in a timely and comprehensive manner.

Working within the approved scope of practice, the MO performs clinical assessments, monitors patient progress and treatment-related toxicities, identifies clinical concerns and escalates complex cases appropriately to the Consultant Oncologist, who retains overall responsibility for diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical decision-making.

The role also supports the Consultant Oncologist in administrative and care coordination matters, including medical reports, insurance pre-authorisations, insurance queries, multidisciplinary communication and follow-up of patient-related matters. The Medical Officer is expected to uphold the highest standards of patient safety, medication safety, professional conduct, clinical governance and regulatory compliance while contributing to an excellent patient experience.

Key Responsibility 1 – Clinical Assessment and Patient Management

Conduct comprehensive patient assessments including history taking and physical examinations.

Review laboratory, radiological and diagnostic investigation results.

Formulate and implement management plans within the approved scope of practice.

Monitor patients undergoing treatment and assess treatment response.

Identify patient deterioration and initiate appropriate management.

Escalate complex clinical situations to Consultant Oncologists promptly.

Participate in patient follow-up and continuity of care.

Key Responsibility 2 – Oncology Treatment Support

Provide day-to-day clinical support in the ongoing management and monitoring of patients under the care of the Consultant Oncologist.

Facilitate implementation of approved treatment plans.

Review treatment orders for completeness and appropriateness.

Monitor patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and supportive treatments.

Identify and manage treatment-related adverse effects under supervision.

Assist with procedures delegated by Consultant Oncologists and permitted within credentialed scope of practice.

Key Responsibility 3 - Patient Care Coordination and Continuity of Care

Serve as the primary clinical coordinator for patients throughout their treatment journey.

Coordinate consultations, investigations, treatment appointments, procedures and follow-up visits.

Track outstanding laboratory results, imaging studies, pathology reports and specialist referrals to ensure timely review and follow-up.

Monitor progress of patients between clinic visits and treatment cycles.

Liaise with patients, caregivers and multidisciplinary team members regarding treatment plans and care requirements.

Facilitate timely escalation of abnormal findings, treatment complications and urgent patient issues.

Support coordination of survivorship care, supportive care and transition-of-care plans where appropriate.

Coordinate care with external healthcare providers, hospitals, laboratories and community services when required.

Ensure timely closure and follow-up of outstanding patient-related matters.

Key Responsibility 4 – Medication Safety

Adhere to all medication management policies, protocols and guidelines.

Verify patient identity, medication orders, dosages, frequencies and routes prior to administration or approval.

Participate in medication safety initiatives and incident investigations.

Report medication incidents, near misses and safety concerns promptly.

Collaborate with pharmacists and nursing staff to ensure safe medication practices.

Key Responsibility 5 – Emergency and Acute Care Management

Respond appropriately to medical emergencies occurring within the oncology service.

Initiate immediate stabilisation and emergency management measures.

Coordinate escalation, referral or transfer when necessary.

Key Responsibility 6 – Clinical Documentation and Record Management

Maintain accurate, complete and timely medical documentation.

Record consultations, treatment plans, progress notes and procedures within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.

Ensure documentation supports clinical decision-making, treatment authorisation, insurance requirements and continuity of care.

Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and organisational documentation requirements.

Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information.

Key Responsibility 7 – Patient Education and Communication

Explain diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures and potential risks to patients and caregivers.

Provide counselling regarding treatment expectations, side effects and follow-up requirements.

Address patient concerns professionally and empathetically.

Support informed decision-making through effective communication.

Key Responsibility 8 – Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Work collaboratively with Consultant Oncologists, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals.

Participate in multidisciplinary discussions and care planning.

Coordinate implementation of agreed care plans across the multidisciplinary team.

Support smooth operational workflow within the oncology service.

Key Responsibility 9 – Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement

Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement activities.

Support accreditation and regulatory compliance initiatives.

Comply with organisational policies, procedures and clinical pathways.

Participate in investigations of incidents, complaints and adverse events.

Contribute to patient safety programmes and risk management activities.

Key Responsibility 10 – Insurance and Medical Reporting

Complete medical reports, insurance forms and treatment summaries accurately and within required timelines.

Support insurance pre-authorisations and reimbursement requirements through provision of clinical information and documentation.

Respond to insurance-related medical queries in accordance with organisational policies and consultant guidance.

Prepare clinical summaries and supporting medical documentation as requested.

Liaise with patients, insurers and internal stakeholders on insurance-related medical documentation requirements.

Key Responsibility 11 – Professionalism and Ethical Practice

Practice in accordance with MMC requirements and applicable legislation.

Maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Demonstrate honesty, integrity and accountability.

Accept constructive feedback and participate in performance improvement activities.

Maintain professional competence through Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.

Requirements:

Basic Medical Degree recognised by the Malaysia Medical Council (MMC).

Full registration with MMC.

Valid Annual Practising Certificate (APC).

Minimum three (3) years post-housemanship experience as a Medical Officer or equivalent.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems.

Experience in oncology, haematology or internal medicine.
