Job summary

Bukku Accounting is seeking an Engineering Team Lead to split time between hands-on development and leading a junior-to-mid team. You’ll influence web and mobile work, set coding standards, and drive delivery with strong collaboration with product and design.

You will guide architecture, performance, and quality while mentoring engineers and shaping engineering direction for scalable cloud software.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in modern web development with leadership or mentoring experience.
• Full-stack capability across frontend and backend (Next.js, Laravel).
• Strong understanding of scalable architecture and performance.
• Proficient with HTML5, CSS3 and modern CSS frameworks.
• Experience with RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and state management tools.

Responsibilities

• Write clean, maintainable code across the stack and set coding standards.
• Translate specifications and wireframes into scalable software components.
• Build reusable components and libraries for future use.
• Review code and uphold engineering best practices across the team.

Job description

Bukku is a well-funded and fast growing software company running the most-loved cloud accounting software currently being used by more than 20k SMEs in the country.

We’re now entering our next phase of growth and are looking for an Engineering Team Lead — a true player-coach who splits their time roughly equally between hands-on engineering and leading a team of junior-to-mid developers. You’ll still be deep in the code, setting the technical bar by example, but you’ll also own how the team delivers: its process, its quality, and its people.

As we expand onto mobile, you’ll help shape how we build and ship across both web and mobile. This is a role for someone who wants both sides of the job — if you love building great software and want to grow engineers, shape engineering direction, and be accountable for what the team ships, this is for you.

Responsibilities

• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code across the stack — and set the standard for others.
• Translate specifications and wireframes into high-quality, scalable solutions.
• Build reusable components and libraries for future use.
• Review code and uphold engineering best practices across the team.

Leadership (the other half)

• Lead a team of junior/mid-level engineers — engineers will report to you, and you’ll be responsible for their growth, performance, and development.
• Own the team’s delivery: plan and prioritise work, keep things moving, and be accountable for what ships and when.
• Run and improve the team’s engineering process (Scrum events, code review culture, release practices).
• Participate in and help shape technical decision-making and engineering direction, across both web and our growing mobile work.
• Collaborate with product managers and designers to deliver high-impact features.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of solid experience in modern web development, with some experience leading or mentoring engineers.
• Full-stack capability — comfortable across both frontend and backend, ideally with Next.js and Laravel.
• Solid understanding of application architecture, performance, and scalable design.
• Good knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and modern CSS frameworks.
• Familiarity with RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and state management tools (Redux, Zustand, etc.).
• Experience working with Git, CI/CD, and Scrum teams.
• Strong backend and data fundamentals: MySQL (including raw queries), and a working understanding of *nix commands and basic server administration.
• Willingness to lead our React Native mobile work is essential; hands-on mobile experience is a plus.
• Highly analytical with strong logical thinking.
• Strong communication skills, a willingness to share knowledge, and the ability to give clear, constructive feedback.
• Self-driven and comfortable working in (and bringing order to) a fast-paced environment.
