We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, develop and operate the server-side foundation of the Group's industrial digital platform supporting offshore EPCIC operations.
Reporting to the Digital Platform Lead, you will be responsible for backend services, APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure and data services that support the Group's digital twin, artificial intelligence, machine learning, ontology and industrial data initiatives.
This is a core engineering role that requires strong hands-on technical capabilities. You will transform data from industrial sites, engineering systems, IoT devices, ERP, OA and third-party systems into reliable, secure and high-performance backend services, while contributing to common engineering standards across the Group's digital platform.
Design, develop and maintain scalable backend services and microservices using Java (Spring Boot / Spring Cloud) and Python (FastAPI).
Define service boundaries, API contracts and integration patterns for the Group's industrial data platform.
Develop and maintain REST APIs, GraphQL endpoints and WebSocket services supporting dashboards, digital twin, AI and ontology applications.
Apply sound software engineering principles to ensure scalability, maintainability, reliability and security.
Design, optimise and maintain enterprise databases including PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, SQL Server and MySQL.
Develop logical and physical data models, ER models, database schemas and data structures.
Perform SQL optimisation, indexing, partitioning, query tuning and database performance monitoring.
Implement and maintain database security, backup and recovery, high availability and replication practices.
Establish database design and management standards across backend services.
Experience with PolarDB / ApsaraDB RDS is an advantage.
Deploy, manage and operate backend services on cloud infrastructure, with Alibaba Cloud experience being an advantage.
Containerise applications using Docker and deploy workloads using Kubernetes.
Maintain CI/CD pipelines and Git-based development workflows.
Monitor system performance, availability, reliability and resource utilisation.
Support cloud infrastructure optimisation, performance tuning and cost management.
4. Data Processing & System Integration
Develop batch and streaming data processing pipelines using Python, SQL, PySpark and Spark SQL.
Integrate data from industrial and enterprise sources including OPC-UA, MQTT, REST APIs, CSV/Excel, ERP, OA and third-party systems.
Work with industrial and analytical data formats including Parquet, Delta, Avro, ORC and JSON.
Design and process time-series data from industrial sensors and equipment, including data relating to strain, motion, wave, fatigue, temperature and pressure.
Support data processing workloads on Databricks / Spark environments.
5. Data Governance & Service Quality
Establish and maintain standards for metadata management, data lineage, data quality and data dictionaries.
Support master data management and data governance initiatives.
Establish backend coding standards, API design guidelines and database design conventions.
Implement appropriate monitoring, logging, testing and quality assurance practices for backend services.
Provide stable and scalable backend and data services for the Group's digital twin, AI, machine learning, data lakehouse and ontology initiatives.
Collaborate with software engineers, data engineers, data scientists, domain specialists and other stakeholders to deliver integrated digital solutions.
Troubleshoot and resolve backend, database and integration issues in production environments.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Group's digital engineering standards and platform architecture.
Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Engineering or a related discipline.
Minimum 8 years of relevant backend engineering experience, with strong hands-on proficiency in Java (Spring Boot / Spring Cloud) and Python.
Strong experience in designing and operating relational and time-series databases, particularly PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, SQL Server and MySQL.
Solid knowledge of database design, including schema design, SQL optimisation, indexing, partitioning, views, stored procedures, transactions, backup, recovery and replication.
Experience designing and developing REST APIs, GraphQL and WebSocket services.
Hands‑on experience with microservices architecture, Docker, Kubernetes and Git-based development workflows.
Experience with cloud platforms; Alibaba Cloud experience is an advantage.
Familiarity with Spark, PySpark, Spark SQL, Databricks and data lakehouse concepts, including Delta Lake.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex backend, database and integration issues.
Good written and spoken English communication skills, with the ability to read and interpret technical documentation and collaborate effectively on international projects.
Experience working in cross-functional or international project environments is an advantage.
Experience with industrial data platforms and protocols such as OPC-UA, MQTT, Modbus, IoT and SCADA.
Experience in energy, offshore engineering, shipbuilding, manufacturing, industrial internet or large-scale digital platform environments.
Experience with time‑series database projects, particularly TimescaleDB.
Experience in MLOps, AI data platforms, knowledge graphs, ontology or digital twin solutions.
Experience with Foundry or similar enterprise data platforms.
Experience working with large‑scale industrial or engineering data environments.
