Clerk of Work (Site Inspector) - Mid Level
The Clerk of Works is responsible for the day-to-day inspection, monitoring and recording of construction works on site, acting as the Company's eyes and ears at project level. The role ensures that all works executed by the contractor and its subcontractors comply with the approved drawings, specifications, contract requirements, statutory standards and the approved construction programme, and that any discrepancy, defect or non-compliance is identified, documented and rectified promptly.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out daily coordination, inspection and monitoring of the contractor's and subcontractors' works to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications and required standards of workmanship.
- Check setting out, levels, dimensions, alignment and formwork before proceeding works, and witness key stages such as reinforcement inspection, concrete pouring, piling, waterproofing and finishing works.
- Witness and record on-site testing and sampling — concrete cube and slump tests, compaction tests, water and pressure tests, and material sampling — and verify results against the specification.
- Inspect and verify materials delivered to site against approved samples, specifications and delivery orders; reject and report any non-conforming material.
- Identify and report discrepancies between drawings, specifications and other contract documents to the Project Manager and consultants for clarification.
- Maintain a complete daily site diary recording manpower, plant and machinery, materials delivered, weather conditions, work carried out, stoppages, visitors and instructions issued.
- Prepare and submit daily, weekly and monthly site inspection and progress reports supported by dated photographic records.
- Monitor actual progress against the approved construction programme, highlight delays and potential risks, and report them to the Project Manager.
- Attend site meetings, technical and coordination meetings; follow up on matters arising that concern site works.
- Ensure the contractor complies with site safety, environmental, security and housekeeping requirements, and support the Site Safety Supervisor in enforcing site rules.
