Our client is a mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineering and construction company, part of a leading international group. It delivers M&E engineering, construction and services for industrial, commercial and infrastructure clients in Malaysia and Singapore.
The company operates within the decentralised model of its group, combining local market knowledge with the resources of an international organisation, and it is growing quickly.
The role
The Business Unit General Manager is responsible for the overall management and performance of the Business Unit. With the management team, he or she defines the strategy of the Business Unit and its action plan, leads and develops the team, and manages the resources needed for the smooth running of the business.
This is a people-centric and project management-centric leadership role, covering six areas: strategy and vision; health, safety and well-being; environment and sustainability; team leadership and people development; marketing and business development; business administration and risk management.
Key responsibilities
Strategy and vision
- Define the 3 to 5 year strategic plan of the Business Unit with the management team, in line with the other Business Units of the perimeter.
- Build the associated yearly action plan through a structured process with input from key stakeholders.
- Drive accountability for the execution of the strategic and operational plans at every level of the Business Unit.
- Build long-term relationships with customers and stakeholders to develop new business opportunities.
Health, safety and well-being
- Build a strong safety culture so that everyone returns home without harm every day.
- Drive the goal of zero accidents and zero occupational disease for employees, temporary staff and subcontractors.
- Build the yearly safety action plan of the Business Unit and ensure its execution.
- Ensure accidents, incidents and near misses are reported and investigated, and that lessons are shared.
- Ensure all managers lead by example on safety, and promote well-being at work.
Environment, sustainability and compliance
- Build and drive the environmental roadmap and action plan of the Business Unit, in line with the group targets.
- Build and drive the compliance action plan, including the corruption risk map and the completion of compliance training.
- Develop the credibility of the Business Unit on environmental topics with customers, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Ensure the reporting of environmental indicators.
Team leadership and people development
- Motivate the team around the purpose of the Business Unit and promote its shared values.
- Identify and recruit the resources needed, and build a succession plan for key positions.
- Develop people through the training plan and conduct the annual performance reviews of direct reports.
- Promote an inclusive culture, including more women in managerial roles.
- Ensure good social dialogue and the monthly HR reporting of the Business Unit.
Marketing and business development
- Build a commercial strategy for each market segment, in line with the strategy of the Business Unit.
- Develop the existing customer base and the prospection of new customers.
- Take ownership of the sales process, new tenders and the sales forecast (current year, rolling 12 months and budget).
- Promote new offers, and work with the other entities of the group to offer combined solutions to customers.
- Ensure order intake is in line with the resources available to deliver on price, quality and deadlines.
Business administration and risk management
- Build the yearly budget of the Business Unit with the team, and review it periodically.
- Analyse the monthly dashboard (turnover, invoicing, project results, recoveries) and explain the gaps against budget.
- Review projects and contracts monthly with the Project Managers to anticipate problems.
- Ensure the consistency of technical and financial proposals, the selection of projects and the use of proper project and contract management tools.
- Manage the quarterly closing, reforecast and internal control self-assessment, in line with the group management rules.
Profile
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- Solid experience in M&E engineering, construction or services, including the management of a business unit, a branch or a large portfolio of projects with Project Managers reporting to you.
- Proven P&L ownership: budget, forecasting, project margins, cash and risk.
- Strong people leadership, with experience in recruiting, developing and retaining teams.
- Business development experience with customers, consultants and main contractors in Malaysia.
- Strong commitment to safety, with visible leadership on site.
- Fluent in English. Bahasa Malaysia and other local languages are an advantage.
