Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science or closely related area from a reputable institution.
  • Expert technical knowledge in at least one CS area (e.g., Software Engineering, AI, Cybersecurity).
  • Proven teaching experience in Higher Education.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills to represent the School externally.
  • Ability to engage and retain student interest and lead/participate in research supervision.
  • Experience in securing external research funding or developing a long-term research programme.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop modules within relevant subject areas.
  • Deliver modules and provide timely feedback to students.
  • Design and mark assessments and produce teaching materials or publications.
  • Contribute to University strategy on teaching, learning, and knowledge exchange.

Job description

The University of Nottingham Malaysia is seeking to appoint a qualified and suitably experienced individual to join the School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences as an Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to academic activities through the delivery of high-quality teaching and research, and they will be required to undertake administrative work and/or management functions as required and to generally assist with the efficient and effective running of the School and the wider university.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Contributing to the design and development of modules within relevant subject areas.
  • Contributing to the delivery of modules within relevant subject areas.
  • Designing and marking assessments with effective and timely feedback to students.
  • Outputs related to teaching activity, course development, or assessment, which may include production of teaching materials, software, videos, or workbooks, and publishing relevant articles etc.
  • Contribution to delivering University Strategy on teaching and learning.
  • Assisting with research supervision of PhD students and other project students (e.g., final-year UG, PGT).
  • Involvement in specialist teaching activities based on research to UG & PG students and/or industry.
  • Communication of scholarly work to the public/public bodies, through journal articles, conference presentations and proceeding, publications and interviews in media.
  • Involvement in peer review of publications/grants.
  • Applying for research grants or obtaining research or consultation contracts.
  • Contribution to delivering University strategy on research and knowledge exchange.
  • Contribution to the development of strategy/policy at Departmental/School level.
  • Project management responsibility.
  • Evidence of planning and delivering individual or joint objectives/projects as an individual and team member.
  • Contribution to University’s international profile via engagement with the Global Engagement Strategy.
  • Contribution to collegiate activities in support of staff and/or student communities.
  • Evidence of participating in continuous professional development (CPD).

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Computer Science or a closely related area, from a reputable institution.
  • Expert technical knowledge and skills in at least one Computer Science (or closely related) area; e.g. Software Engineering, AI, Cybersecurity, etc. (all relevant subject areas will be considered).
  • Excellent organisational skills and the potential for leadership.
  • Proven skills in motivating undergraduate / postgraduate students, and ideally colleagues as well.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, demonstrating the ability to represent the School, both within the University and externally.
  • Proven teaching experience in the Higher Education sector.
  • Ability to engage and retain the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.
  • Experience of working as a team member, using demonstrable interpersonal and teambuilding skills.
  • Evidence of high-quality computer science (or closely related) research, e.g.: publications in international peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings.
  • Experience of securing external research funding, or evidence of the ability to develop a long-term research programme, including a robust funding plan.
  • Possess an excellent command of English and be an outstanding communicator, who will act as an ambassador for the School and the wider university.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, incorporating written and oral communication skills, time management, organizational, ICT literacy and administrative skills.
