LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort seeks an Aquarium Specialist responsible for display quality, animal husbandry and life support systems operation. You will feed livestock, monitor water quality and maintain equipment while ensuring high standards of hygiene and safety.
You’ll work closely with the Displays team to support daily operations, on-call maintenance and visitor experiences, including talks and demonstrations as required.

Responsible for ensuring consistently high standards of display presentation, life support system operation, animal husbandry and care. To ensure consistently high standards of hygiene, cleanliness and professionalism throughout all aquarium areas. To support the running and maintenance of all off show areas including quarantine and husbandry of animals.

Prepare suitable diets and feed all livestock.
Ensure consistently high levels of animal health and welfare.
Ensure high quality product presentation through the routine maintenance of displays and tanks, thus ensuring high levels of visitor satisfaction.
Complete ongoing routine maintenance of Life Support Systems, crisis management equipment, environmental alarms and associated critical spares.
Complete accurate and up to date displays record systems including deliveries, collections, livestock management, feeding, diving, water quality and associated matters.
Implement continually high levels of cleanliness of all the displays, quarantine and food preparation areas, plus associated plant and workshops.
Maintain and develop displays lighting, signage and interactive displays in the displays area.
The ability to be flexible with working hours and days to meet demands and requirements of the business which operates 7 days a week.
Whilst caring for animals and working with the public and for marketing/PR activities, it is likely that you will be required to work outside your normal contracted hours. In addition, you will be expected to remain flexible with regards to weekly rotas based on the needs of the business and animal requirements.
Ensure all back of house areas are kept presentable to a standard set out by the Displays Curator.
Adhere to all Zoo licence or equivalent regulations and how they apply to the centre.
Assist in maintaining an inventory of supplies, equipment and animal food items necessary for the daily care of the collection
Completion of specific projects or investigations to develop the onsite displays as directed by the displays/BRP team.
To attend and present at conferences or other peer gatherings when requested to talk about the work undertaken on site.
Diving as required including maintenance diving, performance diving and shark/fish feeds, following the diving safety protocols and procedures and performing tasks to schedule and to an appropriate quality.
Daily responsibility for the delivery of displays, animal husbandry, life support systems operation and maintenance and transport processes.
Deliver high quality of work level to ensure that all areas are cross checked before end of day.
Ensures that all displays and quarantine facility is fully operational and that daily activities related to cleaning, maintenance, feeding and other husbandry activities such as routine checking of tanks exhibits and LSS areas are undertaken on a day-to-day basis.
Exploring new processes that will reduce time and or improve animal husbandry and care.
As directed help with the installation of new trials that are key to creating more efficient practices.
As directed working within the guidelines for Animal Health, Animals Husbandry, Displays Creation and Maintenance and Life Support Systems operation and maintenance.
As a key member of the displays team, life support system and intruder alarm callout duties are required and as such will be a designated key holder. Due to the nature and importance of this role it is require for employees within this role to reach the site when on callout duty within 1 hour.
Play a key role in the displays and site team to ensure the smooth operation of the displays and site.
Actively engage with visitors when suitable tasks are being carried out to enhance the visitor experience.
Assist in the agreed Curatorial-Marketing related activities in the aquarium.
To talk and communicate with the guests in a friendly and engaging manner whilst conducting normal duties or as part of an experience or talk where required for the needs of the buisness.
To oversee and lead where needed guest focused animal experiences conducted on site.
Ensure prompt and accurate reporting on animal care, LSS, displays, health and safety incidents on site.
Maintain a high level of communication between the displays and site management and Merlin Animal Welfare Department. Communicate animal health issues to the senior team in absence of a line manager.
When required attend regular team and departmental meetings.
Undergraduate degree in Life Sciences. Previous experience with the maintenance and operation of large life support systems including sand filters, canister filters, UV sterilizers, protein skimmers, and ozone generators is preferred.
Minimum of 2 years of aquatic animal experience in a professional aquarium environment with demonstrated knowledge of safe animal handling practices and maintaining a safe working environment required. Experience working with a variety of marine and freshwater species of fish and invertebrates.
As gained through significant experience as a home aquarist or through advanced studies / education.
Hold a SCUBA diving qualification equivalent to a PADI advanced or rescue diver level.
A working knowledge of Life Support Systems as employed on the site to ensure correct maintenance is carried out in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations and swift resolution of problems if they occur.
A good knowledge of the Water Environment (basic chemistry of fresh and marine waters) and operational understanding of aquarium life support systems, which will allow the identification and resolution of problems with the environment for the animals.
A practical ability to create ‘wow’ displays with a working knowledge of the correct use of Theming, Lighting, and Water Movement to deliver this.
A good understanding of animal husbandry (including nutrition), animal behaviour acquisition and principles of quarantine and acclimatisation of animals to ensure each display houses amazing creatures.
A good understanding of the importance accurate record keeping and a working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel programs.
A practical ability to participate in conservation projects and environmental impact reduction that assist in underpinning the SEA LIFE brand.
