Tax Analyst

Employment Type: Full-time, temporary assignment

Work Arrangement: Hybrid, subject to business requirements

The Opportunity

International Paper is seeking a proactive and analytically minded Tax Analyst to join its Tax team on a temporary six-month assignment.

In this role, you will support federal and local tax compliance activities, prepare tax and accounting reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, assist with corporate reporting, and coordinate information with internal and external stakeholders.

This opportunity is particularly well suited to an accounting professional who has a genuine interest in taxation and is motivated not only to complete assigned tasks, but also to understand their purpose, underlying rationale, and associated business risks.

We place significant value on intellectual curiosity, sound judgement, transparency, organisation, and the ability to solve problems proactively. Technical knowledge is relevant; however, the ability to learn, investigate, communicate and take ownership will be equally important.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the calculation and determination of federal and local taxes, including corporate income tax, value-added tax and payroll-related taxes.
  • Support the preparation and filing of annual tax returns, statutory tax reports, information returns and other assigned compliance obligations.
  • Participate in transfer-pricing compliance and electronic-accounting activities.
  • Prepare accounting and tax reconciliations, investigating material differences and documenting their origin.
  • Review supporting documentation to assess its completeness, accuracy and consistency.
  • Analyse tax-related risks involving electronic invoices, specialised service providers, restricted-party lists, customs documentation and other applicable controls.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methods to identify root causes, potential impacts and corrective actions.
  • Prepare calculations, provisions and reports for corporate stakeholders.
  • Compile information and supporting evidence for audits, litigation, internal reviews and tax-authority requests.
  • Respond to tickets and stakeholder enquiries through clear, complete and well-structured written communication.
  • Maintain organised working papers, documentary evidence, correspondence and audit trails.
  • Communicate errors, discrepancies and potential risks promptly and transparently.
  • Follow assigned matters through to their resolution, validation or formal closure.
  • Contribute to the standardisation and continuous improvement of tax processes, controls and working papers.
Stakeholder Interaction

The Tax Analyst will work closely with:

  • Tax Management and other members of the Tax team.
  • Plant controllers and accounting teams.
  • Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Treasury, Procurement, Human Resources and Information Technology.
  • Internal and external auditors.
  • External tax advisers.
  • Vendors, customers and other business stakeholders.
  • Tax authorities, when required and under appropriate supervision.

The successful candidate must be able to request information professionally, clarify inconsistencies respectfully and maintain effective follow-up even when working across different functions and priorities.

Candidate Profile
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. A completed degree is required, or the candidate must be in the immediate process of obtaining the corresponding professional qualification.
  • Approximately two years of experience in taxation, general accounting or auditing.
  • Candidates with less experience may be considered if they demonstrate exceptional learning agility, analytical ability and alignment with the team’s working style.
  • General knowledge of Mexican federal and local taxes.
  • Familiarity with accounting reconciliations and the interpretation of financial or tax documentation.
  • Exposure to SAP and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Intermediate to advanced English proficiency.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in writing.
  • Strong organisational and follow-through capabilities.
  • Genuine interest in building further expertise in taxation.
What Will Make You Successful

You are likely to thrive in this assignment if you:

  • Investigate the origin of a problem rather than merely reporting its symptoms.
  • Ask thoughtful questions and actively seek reliable answers.
  • Understand why an activity is performed and which risk it is intended to control.
  • Identify inconsistencies when reviewing source documents and supporting evidence.
  • Communicate mistakes or concerns immediately rather than concealing or postponing them.
  • Take responsibility for correcting issues and preventing recurrence.
  • Organise your workload through calendars, notes, task tracking and time-blocking practices.
  • Write concise, logical and well-supported responses to tickets and stakeholder enquiries.
  • Learn quickly and progressively perform recurring activities with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate flexibly and support the team when occasional business needs extend beyond your usual assignments.
Professional Integrity

Accuracy is essential in taxation, but we recognise that mistakes can occur. What matters is how they are handled.

We are looking for someone who demonstrates professional integrity by raising concerns promptly, communicating errors transparently, assessing their potential impact and actively participating in the appropriate corrective action.

Why Join Us?

This temporary assignment offers the opportunity to gain meaningful exposure to corporate tax compliance, financial information, internal controls, cross-functional stakeholders and structured problem-solving in a global business environment.

By the end of the assignment, the successful candidate is expected to have developed a deeper understanding of the company’s tax processes and the ability to perform recurring responsibilities with a high degree of autonomy and limited supervision.
