The Sr. Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Automation is responsible for driving strategic automation initiatives across manufacturing operations to improve safety, quality, productivity, and operational performance while delivering measurable financial results. This role leads projects from concept through implementation, including automation design, controls integration, business case development, supplier management, commissioning, and sustainment.

As a key technical leader, you will partner with Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, Finance, and Product Engineering teams to identify automation opportunities, standardize manufacturing processes, and implement scalable solutions that support Carrier's operational excellence and growth objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead automation initiatives for heat exchanger manufacturing processes, including shell‑and‑tube and finned‑tube coil production.
  • Develop and implement automation solutions for final assembly operations, including refrigerant charging systems, brazing and welding support equipment, sensor installation, controls integration, and end‑of‑line testing.
  • Design, support, troubleshoot, and optimize manufacturing automation systems, including PLC, HMI, safety systems, and automated testing platforms utilizing technologies such as Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, and LabVIEW.
  • Expand manufacturing digitalization capabilities through MES integration, automated test systems, production traceability, and structured data collection.

  • Develop automation business cases and capital investment proposals, including ROI analysis, payback calculations, NPV/IRR assessments, implementation cost analysis, and project prioritization.
  • Partner with Finance to establish benefit realization plans, validate savings after implementation, and ensure long-term sustainment through audits, standard work, and training.
  • Lead suppliers and system integrators throughout the project lifecycle, including requirements definition, RFQ development, technical evaluations, FAT, SAT, commissioning, startup, ramp‑up, and project handoff.
  • Define run‑at‑rate expectations and ensure automation solutions achieve targeted cycle time, availability, quality, and performance requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements through risk assessments, machine safeguarding, interlocks, LOTO readiness, and commissioning validation.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and New Product Introduction teams to maintain PFMEAs, Control Plans, Reaction Plans, and process capability requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma methodologies, root cause analysis, and data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Develop and standardize automation architectures, controls strategies, preferred sensors, safety systems, HMI standards, test data structures, and troubleshooting methodologies across manufacturing operations.

We are looking for an innovative and results‑driven engineering professional with strong manufacturing automation expertise, business acumen, and a passion for operational excellence.

As a minimum you must have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience implementing manufacturing automation solutions in production environments.
  • 8+ years of experience developing business cases and delivering verified hard savings (labor, scrap reduction, availability improvement, and FPY gains).
  • 8+ years of experience commissioning and sustaining automation systems within an operating manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to translate manufacturing challenges into measurable improvement initiatives and business results.
Although not necessary, it would be nice if you have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Experience in heat exchanger manufacturing (shell‑and‑tube and/or finned‑tube coils), commercial HVAC chiller assembly, or refrigeration‑related manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in control panel manufacturing automation, including opportunities to standardize and automate panel‑building processes such as wire processing and labeling, poka‑yoke terminations, torque verification, functional testing, PLC/VFD parameter loading, and traceability.
  • Experience with automated welding, brazing processes, and automated leak and pressure testing systems.
  • Familiarity with MES systems, manufacturing traceability solutions, automated test data acquisition systems, and industrial networking.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification or equivalent continuous improvement leadership experience.
Benefits
  • We offer a competitive total rewards package that may include other benefits and well‑being programs. Offerings vary by role and location and are designed to support employees’ health, security, and success.
