AAM - American Axle & Manufacturing seeks a Sr. Controls and Automation Engineer to design, develop, and implement advanced control systems for manufacturing processes.

You will optimize production efficiency, improve quality, and ensure reliability and safety of automated equipment. The role requires 5+ years in industrial controls, expert PLC/HMI capabilities, and strong collaboration across cross-functional teams.

Formación

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation or related field.
• 5+ years in industrial controls and automation in manufacturing.
• Expert PLC programming (Rockwell/Siemens) and HMI/SCADA (Ignition, FactoryTalk).
• Strong knowledge of EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP/IP.
• Experience with robotics (Fanuc/ABB/Kuka) and vision systems.
• Electrical design and schematic interpretation (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
• Leadership of projects from concept to commissioning.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Familiarity with OSHA/NFPA 79 safety standards.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sr. Controls and Automation Engineer to design, develop, and implement advanced control systems and automation solutions for our manufacturing processes. This role focuses on optimizing production efficiency, improving product quality, and ensuring the reliability and safety of our automated equipment.

Job Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex control systems, including PLC programming (Rockwell, Siemens, etc.), HMI/SCADA development, and industrial networking.
• Develop and execute automation strategies to enhance manufacturing processes, reduce cycle times, and minimize operational costs.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues related to control systems, robotic cells, and automated machinery on the production floor.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., manufacturing, maintenance, quality, IT) to define project requirements, integrate new technologies, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
• Oversee the specification, procurement, and installation of new automation equipment and control components.
• Develop and maintain detailed documentation for control systems, including electrical schematics, PLC programs, HMI screens, and operational manuals.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies in all automation projects.
• Participate in root cause analysis for production downtime and implement preventative measures.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices in industrial automation and controls.

Required Skills and Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in industrial controls and automation engineering within a manufacturing environment, preferably in automotive or heavy industry.
• Expert-level proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Rockwell Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal) and HMI/SCADA development (e.g., Ignition, FactoryTalk View).
• Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g., EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP/IP).
• Demonstrated experience with robotic systems integration (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, Kuka) and vision systems.
• Proficiency in electrical design and schematic interpretation (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
• Experience with servo and motion control systems.
• Proven ability to lead projects from concept through commissioning and support.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse teams.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Familiarity with industry safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA 79).
