Job summary

Etsy is seeking a Senior Software Engineer I to lead and implement solutions for moderately complex problems aligned with our team goals. You will guide teammates, deliver projects, and enable others to succeed across a broad product and system area.

This full-time role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager. Expect collaboration across Engineering, Product, Design, and business teams, and to contribute to the web stack using diverse technologies, with adaptability in mind.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software development experience.
• Experience in information retrieval systems and ability to write high performance production quality code.
• Experience operating within a large codebase and crafting simplicity from complex systems.
• Flexibility with different programming languages and cloud-native environments.

• Taking the lead on advising and implementing solutions to loosely scoped problems.
• Demonstrated ability to write understandable, testable code with maintainability in mind.

• Curiosity and ability to learn autonomously.
• Experience working with AI Agents and related tools, like MCP servers and skills.

What's the Role?

As a Senior Software Engineer I, you will be responsible for taking the lead on directing and implementing solutions to moderately complex, loosely scoped problems that are aligned with your team's goals. Your work extends to many parts of a product or system. You deliver projects independently or by leading your teammates to do so. You enable other engineers on your team to be successful.

This is a full time role reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Collaborate closely with Engineers, Product Managers, and Designers to develop solutions to help sellers better run their businesses and remain competitive.
• Collaborate with our cross-functional teams and business partners across Etsy.
• Contribute at all levels of our web application stack, ranging from front-end web interfaces to back-end technologies. We use HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, PHP, MySQL, and Memcache, but it's okay if you don't have experience with all of these!
• Developing and maintaining critical path product services.
• Provide detailed and constructive design and code reviews.
• Gain insights through research, data analysis, and our A/B tests.
• Push code to production early and often using our continuous deployment systems.
• Build and maintain observability and test tooling - logging, monitoring, distributed tracing, alerting and offline test tools needed for search and recommendation systems.
• Practice continuous learning and agile delivery models to stay informed and focused on our deliverables.

To be successful in this role,

The Senior Software Engineer I will work collaboratively with your teammates to independently tackle well-scoped problems, regularly deliver work to end users and are a primary contributor to your team's goals. You work on features and projects within a broader product or system. Your technical planning has shown to reduce failure scenarios and identify edge cases early on.

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to salary, you'll be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family. Base salary is determined by your location, skills, and experience.

Location

We prioritize candidates based within commutable distance of Etsy’s Mexico Office. Depending on proximity, we ask team members to come in once or twice per week. Remote candidates outside commutable distance may be considered on a case-case basis, with the expectation of occasional travel to the office.
