Persistent Systems is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Text Analytics team, building large-scale systems that turn unstructured data into actionable insights. This backend Java engineer role focuses on performance, scalability, and distributed systems, with exposure to NLP, ML, and GenAI applied to real-world products.

You will collaborate with Engineering and Data Science, influence technical direction, and mentor other engineers in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• BA/BS in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years backend software development experience with Java and high-speed processing pipelines.
• Experience integrating AI coding assistants into development workflows with code reviews and security considerations.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Responsibilities

• Design and drive the technical roadmap and product implementation; help prioritize and plan pragmatically.
• Ship software that is scalable and robust and ensure it remains healthy.
• Collaborate with dependent engineering teams to maintain uninterrupted service.
• Identify gaps in knowledge, tooling, and process; address with manager and PM.
• Incorporate best development practices and build tooling to enforce them.
• Work in small agile teams with daily standups, demos, code reviews, and spikes.
• Mentor and coach junior engineers; contribute to tech talks and presentations.
• Represent Persistent Engineering’s tech scene through meetups and sharing insights.

About The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Text Analytics team and help build large-scale systems that transform unstructured data into meaningful insights.

This is a strong fit for a backend Java engineer who enjoys tackling performance, scalability, and distributed systems challenges, while also wanting exposure to how NLP, Machine Learning, and Generative AI are applied to real-world products.

You’ll collaborate closely with Engineering and Data Science teams, influence technical direction, contribute to engineering best practices, and mentor other engineers along the way.

What You'll Do:

• Design, implement and drive the technical roadmap and product implementation; help the team prioritize and plan pragmatically.
• Ship software that is scalable and robust and then keep it humming.
• Partner closely with dependent teams across engineering to ensure uninterrupted service.
• Identify gaps in knowledge, tools, and process and work with your manager & PM to address those.
• Incorporate the best development practices and habits and help build tooling to enforce the same.
• Work in small teams with innovative engineers in an agile environment with daily standups, demo days, code reviews and research spikes.
• Mentor and coach junior engineers and impact teams through tech talks and presentations.
• Be a voice of Medallia Engineering’s tech scene through hosting and participating in meetups.

Expertise You’ll Bring:

Minimum Qualifications

• BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
• 4+years backend software development experience with Java with high-speed / performant processing pipelines
• AI-Assisted Workflow & Code Audit: Experience integrating AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude or similar) into development workflows, including reviewing, benchmarking, and refactoring generated code for security, performance, and architecture standards.
• Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Distributed Data Processing Systems leveraging Kafka and/or Kubernetes.
• NLP processing
• Experience with API frameworks, e.g. Swagger or RAML, and API lifecycle infrastructure and management tools.
• Performed software development in a production environment using a mainstream object-oriented programming language (Java, Java Libraries, Java Frameworks preferred)
• Relational Database experience such as PostgreSQL
