Ubuntu Linux Kernel Engineer - Silicon Enablement

Canonical is looking to broaden its silicon enablement squad to help Ubuntu Linux shift from a desktop OS to a full platform for silicon manufacturers such as NVIDIA, Xilinx, MediaTek and Qualcomm. The Kernel Team builds, maintains and distributes the Linux kernel for Ubuntu; we need an engineer with strong hardware‑level software development skills to support our silicon partners and optimise performance on their SoCs.

What your day will look like
  • Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team
  • Work closely with our silicon vendor partners to integrate platform support into the Ubuntu Linux kernel for their product ranges
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by partners, customers, the community and through your own testing
  • Deliver distinct silicon‑optimised variants of the Ubuntu kernel worldwide
  • Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing
  • Submit, review and apply kernel patches in coordination with upstream maintainers
  • Identify new performance optimisation opportunities on partner silicon
What we are looking for in you
  • Well‑organised self‑starter able to thrive in a remote work environment
  • Professional manner with colleagues, business partners and the open‑source community
  • Clear written and verbal communication in English
  • Solid programming ability in C
  • Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs and other hardware‑level system engineering
  • Strong background with git
  • Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events of up to two weeks length

  • Python and Bash scripting ability
  • Prior background with the major SoC families
  • Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging
  • Demonstrated experience with Linux kernel patching and debugging
  • Solid understanding of performance optimisation for silicon platforms
