The research activity will focus on microbial populations associated with food and agro-environmental matrices using culture-dependent and -independent approaches. Main microbial groups will be quantified using conventional microbiological techniques and selective and/or differential media. Microorganisms of interest will be isolated, purified, identified, and preserved for phenotypic and functional characterization. DNA extracted directly from the matrices will be used for metataxonomic analyses targeting the 16S rRNA and ITS/26S rRNA genes. Specific microbial groups, species, or targets will be detected and quantified by Real-Time PCR (qPCR). Integration of microbiological and molecular data will describe microbial community composition, diversity, and dynamics and identify microorganisms of technological, ecological, food safety, or biotechnological interest.
