Marcus Webb Associates Limited is seeking a Senior / Principal Systems Engineer specializing in hydraulics and controls for excavator and wheeled loader platforms in Italy. The role focuses on whole-vehicle performance, hydraulics integration, and control strategy to influence machine architecture for European markets.

You will collaborate with Europe and China teams to optimise hydraulic systems, participate in validation activities, and travel internationally as needed.

Competenze

• Degree in mechanical, mechatronics, hydraulic engineering or related discipline.

Senior / Principal Systems Engineer – Hydraulics & Controls

This role would suit a senior engineer or principal engineer with a solid background in developing hydraulic systems for construction machines (specifically Excavator machine platforms).

Background

This position sits within an established and growing construction machinery OEM and provides the opportunity to influence the design of future Excavator and potentially Wheeled loader machine platforms.

As a senior or principal hydraulics systems engineer you will be responsible for optimising the performance of Excavator and Wheeled Loader machines for the European market. This will involve influencing hydraulics systems architecture and design, working closely with local validation / test engineering teams and the wider global R&D organisation.

Your focus will be on whole vehicle performance and optimisation, including influencing hydraulic system architecture, hydraulic system integration, machine behaviour, and control strategy.

Your Role

• Provide technical guidance and expertise in the development, optimisation and performance of hydraulic systems and electro-hydraulic controls for excavator and wheeled loader platforms


• Work closely with engineering teams in Europe and China to define, develop and optimise hydraulic system architecture, control strategies and machine behaviour


• Act as a technical authority on hydraulic system performance, helping engineering teams resolve complex technical issues and make informed design decisions


• Work with engineering teams to develop and evaluate hydraulic system concepts, architecture and control strategies for current and future machine platforms


• Support the integration of hydraulic and control systems into machines, including system commissioning, testing and problem resolution

Your Background

• Degree qualified or equivalent in mechanical, mechatronics, hydraulic engineering or a related discipline. Also, excellent English communication skills.


• Your background may include systems design, integration, test or validation leading up to becoming a hydraulics systems expert


• You will need significant engineering experience within the construction machinery sector working specifically on the hydraulic systems for entire machines (excavator machines platforms - essential) for construction applications - this is essential and non-negotiable


• Deep understanding of hydraulic system architecture and integration, whole machine performance and optimisation (e.g. productivity, efficiency, responsiveness and operator control)


• Proven experience developing and improving the entire machine’s hydraulic systems and performance and not just designing hydraulic components (most likely gained from validation and field testing machines)


• Good understanding of the interaction between hydraulic systems, electronic controls, powertrain and machine performance would be needed


• Proven relationships with hydraulic component suppliers would be very useful

You will be required to travel internationally, occasionally to China, to work with the wider engineering organisation and support prototype development, testing and technical reviews.

Typically, this is expected to involve several trips per year, depending on project requirements.

This role is based onsite 5 days per week in the Bologna area and is commutable from cities such as Modena, Ferrara, Imola, Reggio Emilia and Faenza. (Hybrid working is not supported)
