Job description

Shape a future with purpose at Arup in Milan.

Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our Civil Engineering team in Europe South, spanning Italy, Spain, Serbia and Türkiye, delivers integrated solutions for data centre, industrial and infrastructure projects. Working within multidisciplinary teams, we design the networks and systems that enable complex developments to operate safely, efficiently and sustainably.

As part of the team, you'll contribute to projects across Italy, Spain and beyond, collaborating with national and international colleagues to develop creative, practical and sustainable solutions for public- and private-sector clients.

The Opportunity

As our portfolio in Italy continues to grow, we are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer to provide technical leadership in roads, underground utilities and drainage design.

You will support the planning, design and delivery of civil engineering solutions for infrastructure projects across sectors including energy, water, transport, data centres and urban development. Working throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and concept development to detailed design and construction support, you will help deliver sustainable and coordinated solutions that respond to our clients' needs.

You will work with multidisciplinary teams to develop site layouts, drainage strategies, earthworks designs, access arrangements and utility coordination solutions. You will also take ownership of defined project packages and prepare and review technical designs, drawings, calculations, models and reports.

Our clients include data centre developers and operators, utility providers, transmission network operators, contractors and public-sector organisations.

As a Civil Engineer at Arup, you will:

Lead the design and coordination of roads, water supply, firewater, foul sewer, surface-water drainage and dry utility networks from concept through to detailed design.

Act as the technical lead for roads, utilities and drainage packages on complex developments, providing guidance and quality oversight to engineers and designers.

Develop and review hydraulic calculations, drainage models, network sizing, stormwater-management solutions and associated technical deliverables.

Coordinate interfaces across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and BIM disciplines, identifying and resolving utility conflicts, design constraints and coordination issues.

Ensure that calculations, models, drawings and reports meet client requirements, programme commitments and applicable technical standards.

Does this role inspire you?

We are looking for someone who is passionate about technically excellent infrastructure design and enjoys solving complex challenges collaboratively.

We also value:

A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, together with relevant experience delivering site-development, utilities, energy or major infrastructure projects.

Technical experience 6+ years in one or more of the following areas: roads and access design, drainage and flood-risk management, earthworks and levels, or utility coordination and diversion planning.

Experience with civil engineering and drainage design software such as Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage or comparable packages.

The ability to lead defined technical packages, review engineering deliverables and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary and international teams.

An interest in digital design, BIM and automation, supported by a proactive and adaptable approach to problem-solving.

We welcome applicants from consultancy, contractor, utility, public-sector and other relevant backgrounds. If you're enthusiastic about the opportunity but don't meet every criterion, we still encourage you to apply.
