Join Schindler as a Senior Android Engineer (m/f/d)

We are seeking a Senior Android Engineer to strengthen our Software Engineering team.

In this role, you will contribute to the implementation of current and future mobile applications for elevator passengers, helping establish and evolve the critical interfaces between mobile applications, elevator control systems, hardware components and access devices that power Schindler's next generation digital mobility ecosystem.

You will play a key role in designing and evolving hardware‑centric mobile solutions, bridging the digital and physical worlds through technologies such as BLE, NFC and future connectivity platforms.

You will support the definition of software architecture, platform strategy and technology vision while driving the implementation of innovative mobile solutions as part of an international, globally distributed software engineering team.

You will collaborate with product owners, architects and development teams, providing technical leadership and guidance on SDK development, hardware interfaces and software engineering best practices.

Location: Milan, Lombardy, Italy (Hybrid: 1-2 days/week working from home)

Your Responsibilities

As a Senior Android Engineer, you will contribute to the development, architecture and continuous improvement of innovative mobile solutions supporting Schindler’s digital mobility ecosystem.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring future‑proof software architecture and design for mobile applications in alignment with Schindler’s strategy and technology vision.
  • Partnering with stakeholders to identify architecturally significant requirements and help shape the architecture vision and technology roadmap.
  • Interacting with product owners and development teams regarding software architectural decisions for mobile applications and related products.
  • Collaborating with engineering teams to shape the overall platform architecture and technology vision.
  • Designing, implementing, testing and continuously improving SDKs to interface with hardware components, access devices and elevator control systems via BLE, NFC and other emerging technologies.
  • Providing technical leadership, guidance and assistance to software engineers in the usage of established SDKs and hardware interfaces.Contributing to sprint plans, estimates and technical design proposals.
  • Investigating commercial and open‑source software frameworks for applicability and integration.
  • Ensuring software quality through collaboration with requirement engineers and testers, while implementing automated tests and continuous integration practices.
  • Participating in all stages of the software development lifecycle, including planning, design, implementation, testing, documentation and deployment.
What You Bring (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated passion for mobile applications and delivering exceptional user experiences.
  • Exposure to and experience with physical access and mobile credential solutions.
  • Strong understanding and application of modern software engineering and software architecture principles.
  • Strong experience developing hardware‑centric mobile applications using modern software engineering practices and technologies.
  • Experience establishing APIs and developing SDKs.
  • Experience with user experience and interface design, test automation and app analytics.
  • Ability to work effectively in international, distributed and fast‑paced environments with changing priorities.
  • Very strong knowledge of native Android application development using Kotlin.
  • Proven experience with BLE, NFC and offline‑mode/offline‑first architectures.
  • Experience optimizing mobile applications for performance, reliability and battery efficiency.Knowledge of product cybersecurity and secure development lifecycle practices.
  • Familiarity with IEC 62443 and secure software development principles.
  • Experience using software development tools including Git and JIRA.
  • Self‑directed, self‑organized, highly responsible and reliable team player.
  • Excellent communication skills with proven experience collaborating in global setups and virtual teams.
  • Strong technical leadership profile, good analytical skills and openness to new technologies.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments using Scrum and/or Kanban.

  • Experience working on software solutions interfacing with elevator systems, access devices or other phygital products.
  • Experience contributing to platform architecture roadmaps and long‑term technology vision.

  • Experience working within global R&D organizations and international software development projects.
