Descrizione del lavoro
Research Fellow (Biologist / Biotechnologist)

The Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale "Amedeo Avogadro," established in 1998, is a unique multi-campus university within Italy, operating across Alessandria, Novara, and Vercelli. Named after the renowned scientist Amedeo Avogadro, the university reflects his global legacy and the unifying identity of the institution across three provinces. It has institutional faculties in the three main cities, as well as additional regional campuses in areas such as Alba, Asti, Biella, and Verbania.

The Project

We are seeking a highly motivated Biologist or Biotechnologist to join our research team for a high-impact project investigating sex-specific differences in cancer.

This project aims to uncover the fundamental mechanisms driving why men and women often have different cancer outcomes. Our hypothesis centers on the pivotal role of mitochondrial metabolism and the epigenetic interplay between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA.

The research is part of a large case‑cohort study (nested in EPIC Italy) and will use advanced molecular techniques to analyze biological samples. The goal is to identify new biomarkers for cancer risk and survival, ultimately paving the way for more personalized prevention and treatment strategies.

Your Role & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be actively involved in the laboratory and analytical work of the project. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Performing molecular biology assays on biological samples.
  • Conducting DNA methylation analysis (both nuclear and mitochondrial).
  • Assisting with mitochondrial functionality assays (e.g., oxidative stress, iron homeostasis).
  • Managing and processing data generated from experiments.
  • Collaborating with senior researchers, bioinformaticians, and epidemiologists.
  • Contributing to data interpretation and the preparation of scientific publications.

Candidate Profile

This is a full‑time on‑site role based in Novara for a Research Fellow specializing in Biology or Biotechnology. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about scientific research and eager to work in the field of molecular epidemiology.

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • A strong, demonstrable interest in epidemiology, genetics, or cancer research.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications (Considered a "Plus"):

  • Previous laboratory experience with Next‑Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques or data analysis.
  • Hands‑on experience with DNA methylation analysis (e.g., bisulfite sequencing, arrays).
  • A solid understanding or prior research experience in mitochondrial biology.

What We Offer

  • The contract is renewable based on performance and funding.
  • The salary varies depending on the type of contract and the candidate's experience. The amount indicated is to consider the net salary.
  • A significant opportunity for professional growth in a dynamic, collaborative, and international research environment.
