European Tech Recruit is seeking mid-level Automation Engineers to support a live industrial automation troubleshooting project in Italy. The role focuses on Siemens PLCs with TIA Portal, diagnosing live faults, and implementing corrective actions on production lines.

You will work onsite in Italy for a 3–6 month contract, with a three-shift rotation and accommodation provided. The ideal candidate has hands-on PLC experience and strong fault-finding skills.

Competenze

We are seeking mid-level Automation Engineers with hands-on PLC experience.
Strong Siemens TIA Portal expertise is essential.
Experience diagnosing live faults on automated production equipment.
Ability to read and understand PLC code and electrical drawings.
Familiarity with Omron tools is a plus but not required.

The Opportunity

We are looking for PLC / Automation Engineers to support a live industrial automation troubleshooting project in Italy.

The key requirement is strong hands-on experience with Siemens PLCs and TIA Portal, with Omron experience considered an advantage.

This is a production support and troubleshooting-focused assignment, rather than a greenfield programming project. You will be responsible for investigating live automation issues, analysing PLC logic, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions to improve equipment reliability and production performance.

If you enjoy getting hands‑on with complex machinery, diagnosing faults and solving real production problems, this could be an excellent opportunity.

What You'll Be Doing

Troubleshoot Siemens PLC-controlled production equipment
Use TIA Portal for online diagnostics and fault finding
Analyse existing PLC logic, sequences and interlocks
Investigate recurring equipment faults, stoppages and downtime
Diagnose issues across PLC software, electrical systems, sensors, drives, instrumentation and communications
Troubleshoot automated machinery and production lines
Identify bottlenecks, intermittent faults and reliability issues
Perform detailed root‑cause analysis
Recommend corrective actions and technical improvements
Create clear action plans outlining issues, priorities and recommended solutions
Support the implementation and testing of corrective actions
Work closely with production, maintenance and engineering teams
Document technical findings and any software changes

Technical Experience

We are particularly interested in engineers with hands‑on experience in:

S7-1200 / S7-1500
PLC diagnostics and online troubleshooting
Ladder Logic, FBD and/or Structured Text / SCL
Industrial Ethernet / Profinet
Drives and motor control
Sensors, actuators and field devices
Automated machinery and production lines
Electrical fault finding
Machine sequencing and interlocks
Commissioning and start‑up
Production troubleshooting
Root‑cause analysis

Experience with Omron PLCs, including Sysmac Studio or CX-Programmer, would be beneficial but is not essential.

Experience with other platforms such as Rockwell / Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff or Mitsubishi is also advantageous.

About You

We are particularly interested in mid-level / medior Automation Engineers with a strong practical background.

You should ideally have:

2+ years' hands‑on PLC / Automation experience
Strong experience with Siemens TIA Portal
Experience troubleshooting automated production equipment
The ability to go online with Siemens PLCs and diagnose live faults
Confidence reading and understanding existing PLC code
Strong fault‑finding and root‑cause analysis skills
Good understanding of electrical drawings and automation hardware
Experience working in live manufacturing or production environments
The ability to distinguish between software, electrical, instrumentation and mechanical faults
Experience working alongside maintenance and production teams
Strong communication and problem‑solving skills
A practical, hands‑on approach
Flexibility to work a three‑shift rotation
Availability to work fully onsite in Italy for 3–6 months

This opportunity would suit an engineer with several years of Siemens automation experience who enjoys troubleshooting, fault finding and improving real‑world production systems.
