DEBMAT asks: how can we understand the structuring of migration routes beyond the present moment? The project addresses this through an innovative lens, examining the materiality of transit and its constitutive effect on the (re)production of migration routes, investigating the structures, infrastructures, and actors shaping routes across the Mediterranean at large. Through material ethnography, material interviews, and Counter-Archiving Workshops, DEBMAT explores the social cartography of migration routes, develops methodologies bridging contemporary archaeology with multi-sited ethnography, and reshapes public discourse on transit migration through collaborative archiving with field actors.
