Mechanisms Design Engineer at Thales Alenia Space – a joint venture of Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%) focused on space manufacturing solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Design spacecraft mechanisms for manned and non‑manned modules and satellites, including selection of components (springs, dampers, gearboxes, levers), materials, surfaces, and tolerances.
  • Perform sizing and preliminary analysis using hand calculation, multibody analysis, and FEM to assess critical areas.
  • Prepare and review CAD models, drawings, and test articles/breadboards for validation.
  • Support development and verification plans: produce design and analysis reports, contribute to instrumentation plans, and evaluate test results.
  • Coach and support skill development of junior engineers.
  • Occasional design verification through static, kinematic or dynamic testing and support related modelling using MATLAB/Simulink.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, or Mechanical Engineering (additional mechanical design coursework considered an asset).
  • Experience in structural or mechanical engineering for space or industrial systems.
  • Proficient in geometry, multibody (ADAMS/Motion View), and FEM (Abaqus, Nastran, HyperWorks, etc.).
  • Strong CAD/CAM skills, drawing interpretation, and familiarity with aerospace design manuals (e.g., Bruhn, Roarks).
  • Knowledge of metallic and composite materials, tribology, manufacturing processes and control laws.
  • Proficiency in Windows Office, Matlab/Simulink or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; French is an additional asset.
