Master Thesis Project: Design of restraint systems of a vehicle by coupling Machine Learning algorithms & Finite Element Method

Italdesign, an Italian design and engineering company specializing in automotive, transportation, and product development, invites an enthusiastic student to join the Numerical Simulations Department. Based in Moncalieri (Turin) with over 1,300 employees worldwide, Italdesign combines creative design with cutting‑edge technology, working with top automotive manufacturers and delivering comprehensive services from concept to production.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and develop a thesis project focused on occupant safety in frontal crash scenarios.
  • Study Finite Element Method codes (e.g., Pamcrash, LS-DYNA) and conduct frontal crash analyses.
  • Design and evaluate restraint systems, applying FEM software.
  • Create a Design of Experiments (DOE) to generate datasets for Machine Learning modeling.
  • Apply ML algorithms to predict key biomechanical values and compare results with traditional biomechanical analysis.
  • Collaborate with the Department’s colleagues and tutor to produce a comprehensive thesis.
Requirements
  • Passion for passive safety, biomechanics, and numerical simulations.
  • Strong interest in artificial intelligence and Machine Learning.
  • Good teamwork, innovation orientation, responsibility, integrity, and communication skills.
  • Proactive time management and strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of FEM codes such as Pamcrash and LS-DYNA.
  • Understanding of crash dynamics, interior/exterior design, and restraint systems.
  • Familiarity with ML algorithms and programming languages (Python or others).
  • English proficiency at least B2 level.

Education: Enrolled in a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Automotive Engineering.
Language skills: Fluent Italian and English (at least B2).
