A leading maritime organization in Genoa is seeking a Principal Marine Surveyor to ensure compliance with maritime rules and classify regulations. This role involves mentoring junior surveyors, conducting comprehensive inspections of vessels, and guaranteeing high-quality outcomes in surveying activities. The ideal candidate should possess a Master’s Degree in Naval Engineering and at least 3 years’ experience as a Senior Surveyor. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to continuous improvement of processes in the marine industry.

Competenze

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Senior Surveyor with an IACS member Classification Society.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply RINA Rules and safety policies effectively.

RINA is currently recruiting for a Italy Yachting Principal Marine Surveyor to join its office in Genoa, Italy within the Mediterranean and Africa Marine Division.

Mission

The Principal Surveyor is an expert within RINA specializing in the application of maritime rules, classification regulations, and industry best practices. This role serves as a cornerstone for ensuring excellence in surveying activities, guaranteeing compliance with statutory and classification standards while fostering continual enhancement of processes. By acting as a mentor and guide, the Principal Surveyor supports the professional growth of junior surveyors and champions the delivery of high‑quality outcomes that meet operational and client expectations.

Key Accountabilities
  • Expert Professional Guidance : Leverage deep expertise in maritime rules, classifications, and industry standards to influence and refine the organization’s surveying methodologies. Stay informed of the latest sector developments to proactively adjust processes, ensuring RINA remains at the forefront of maritime surveying excellence.
  • Comprehensive Inspection & Reporting : Perform detailed surveys of vessels, offshore structures, and marine equipment, ensuring all inspections meet or exceed classification and statutory requirements. Deliver thorough, precise reports that provide stakeholders with clear, actionable insights and maintain transparency.
  • Continuous Process Improvement : Champion innovation in surveying approaches by recognizing new technologies and methods. Suggest and implement enhancements to surveying procedures and safety protocols, supporting ongoing improvements that align with industry evolution.
  • Leadership & Coordination : Strategically plan and coordinate survey schedules and activities to optimize operational efficiency and service quality. Oversee the work of less experienced surveyors, providing critical oversight to maintain consistency, continuity, and the highest standards of quality across projects.
  • Mentorship & Talent Development : Deliver mentorship, technical guidance, and structured training programs to nurture the capabilities of junior team members. Cultivate an environment of continuous professional development and knowledge sharing within the surveying team.
  • Quality Assurance Excellence : Implement rigorous quality control measures by reviewing and validating survey results and documentation produced by the team. Ensure compliance with internal standards, industry regulations, and client requirements at every stage.
  • Innovative Problem Solving : Proactively address challenges encountered during surveys by recommending creative, effective solutions. Encourage and drive adoption of new working methods to enhance operational effectiveness and safety.
  • Client Engagement & Relationship Management : Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with clients by acting as a trusted advisor. Facilitate open communication channels and address client concerns promptly to uphold satisfaction and confidence in services delivered.
  • Ethical Leadership : Adhere strictly to high ethical standards, promoting integrity, fairness, and transparency throughout all surveying activities. Foster an ethical culture that reinforces trust both internally and externally.
Education

Master’s Degree in Naval Engineering

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Senior Surveyor and a total of at least 9 years with an IACS member Classification Society, demonstrating substantial expertise in marine surveying and classification.
  • Master’s Degree in Naval Engineering or closely related field, underpinning technical knowledge required for sophisticated survey tasks.
  • Strong command of English, enabling comprehensive understanding and communication of classification, statutory certification, and related maritime standards.
  • Thorough understanding of RINA’s strategic technical positioning within the marine industry to align survey practices with organizational objectives.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply RINA Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and safety policies effectively.
  • Expertise in analyzing engineering plans, shipbuilding methods, and operational practices of vessels.
  • Competence to conduct diverse survey types including new building, in‑service ship surveys, marine management systems audits, and supplier certification testing, ensuring compliance with applicable rules and procedures.
  • In‑depth knowledge of ship engineering systems, machinery, and relevant computer software tools that support survey activities.
  • Familiarity with cross‑functional technical interfaces that facilitate effective group project collaboration within the marine sector.
