Overview

Electrical Engineer — Contract: Healthcare

Location: London, E13 8SL

Hours of work: 37.5

Shift Pattern: 7:00am - 3:00pm / 12:00pm - 8:00pm (rotating weekly)

Contract Type: Permanent

We are seeking an experienced and reliable Electrical Engineer to join our Estates team at Newham University Hospital. This role involves carrying out maintenance, repairs, and installations across a range of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems, with a primary focus on your electrical discipline. You will play a key part in ensuring a safe, compliant, and efficient environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Job Description

Working under the supervision of the Estates Officer, you’ll complete both planned and reactive maintenance tasks to ensure service continuity. The successful candidate will also collaborate closely with clinical, technical, and management staff to deliver a high-quality service across the hospital estate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out maintenance, repairs, and installations of electrical services and systems.
  • Diagnose and repair faults promptly, ensuring reactive work is completed within agreed timescales.
  • Support pre-planned maintenance (PPM), testing, and inspection of electrical systems.
  • Liaise with the Helpdesk Administrator to ensure all jobs are tracked and recorded accurately.
  • Maintain and repair associated equipment, including catering, alarm, and essential building systems.
  • Adhere to health and safety standards and follow hospital policies and procedures at all times.
  • Collaborate with Estates and clinical teams, providing technical advice and ensuring minimal disruption to services.
  • Work as part of an on-call rota (1 in 4 weeks) to provide emergency cover outside of normal working hours - overtime paid.
Professional and Personal Competencies
  • Proven experience in planned and reactive electrical maintenance, ideally within a hospital or commercial setting.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and a customer-focused approach.
  • Willingness to undertake specialist training, e.g. Medical Gases or Legionella Competent Person.
  • Competent with documentation and reporting associated with maintenance activities.
Qualifications
  • City & Guilds 2230 Level 3, or
  • NVQ 2356 / 2357, or
  • City & Guilds 2330 Level 3 in Electrical Installation and AM2, or
  • Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services
