Summary
We are looking for a Communication System Engineer to contribute to the activity within the frame of programmes and studies undertaken by the “uW Payloads, Data Handling and Communication Engineering” Unit.
Responsibilities
- Support definition of uW instruments and communication subsystem functional and performance requirements, performing the required analysis and assessment.
- Define, implement and maintain models and software tools for simulating the payload or subsystem functionalities and main performances.
- Define, implement and maintain RF budgets and link budgets as applicable.
- Define command and control interfaces, and related interfaces and budgets (Data Handling, Electrical, RF).
- Contribute to the definition of payloads or subsystem architecture.
- Support relevant equipment and sub‑assembly, internal and external supplier technical monitoring and review attendance.
- Assess and evaluate payload or subsystem functionalities and performance during verification and validation phases based on test results.
- Support the AIT campaign as System and Verification engineer where applicable.
- Participate in meetings and reviews with both internal and external customers.
- Prepare documents and presentations.
- Contribute to programme reports and minutes of meetings.
- All activities are conducted under Italian Defense National Authority Rules; the candidate must be eligible for the relevant security authorization or clearance.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Electronic or Telecommunication Engineering.
- Background in communication systems with a focus on space applications.
- Knowledge of digital and RF electronics for data handling, processing and wide‑band communication, TT&C.
- Knowledge of main on‑board data interfaces:
- MIL‑1553B, CAN
- SpaceWire, High‑Speed Serial Link (WizardLink)
- Knowledge of radio communication and related protocols, including:
- Information theory
- Advanced coding and modulation (Turbo coding, SCC, DVBS2)
- Modelling and simulation of HPA non‑linearity and compensation algorithms in DSP for high‑order modulation schemes.
- Modelling and simulation of frequency response impairment and relevant equalization techniques.
- Atmospheric propagation effects (loss, depolarisation, cross‑polarisation).
- CCSDS protocols for space data link.
- Data compression techniques and algorithms.
- Knowledge of MATLAB and programming languages (e.g., C, Visual Basic).
- Proficiency in MS Office products.
- Good command of English (written and verbal).
- Team‑working attitude.
- Security clearance eligibility under Italian Defense National Authority Rules.
