Our client is a well-established company in the aerospace sector, operating since 1962 in the design and production of avionics equipment and systems for airplanes and helicopters.

Role: Chief Project Engineer

Location: Cassina de' Pecchi, Milan

Contract: Permanent, salary to be defined based on experience

The Chief Project Engineer (CPE), as appointed by the Head of the Design Organization, performs all duties related to the scope of the specific project/programme. The CPE is responsible for leading and supervising the design, development, integration, and certification/qualification of the company's avionics systems. This role combines technical expertise, project management and team leadership to ensure the successful delivery of projects while meeting performance, safety and schedule requirements.

Pursuing its role CPE relies on the collaboration of direct reports and/or stakeholders appointed by the heads of the technical disciplines to form a cross‑functional engineering team. In addition, hardware design activities are directly supervised by the CPE, with HW resources reporting directly to this role to ensure seamless integration and alignment with project objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and mentor a multi‑disciplinary engineering team, ensuring adherence to best practices, standards and aerospace industry regulations while driving the technical design and development of Systems and/or LRUs.
  • Directly supervise hardware design activities, ensuring alignment with project requirements and organizational goals, with HW resources reporting directly to the CPE.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including customers, suppliers and regulatory authorities.
  • Collaborate with internal departments such as Procurement, Manufacturing, Product Support and Quality Assurance to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Oversee system integration, testing and certification/qualification activities as well as prototype manufacturing.
  • Provide technical guidance to cross‑functional engineering teams, ensuring adherence to company standards, best practices and aerospace requirements.
  • Ensure alignment between technical and overall project objectives.
  • Plan and control the project, including developing and managing project plans, timelines, milestones and budget in collaboration with Program Manager and Commercial Office.
  • Collaborate with Program Manager to ensure delivery milestones are met.
  • Monitor risks and opportunities, taking corrective action where necessary and identifying recovery plans.
  • Prepare and present or manage technical documentation, progress reports and certification packages.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability and excellence.
  • Evaluate and propose new technologies and innovations for potential incorporation into design while ensuring a continued focus on safety and certification.
  • Monitor industry trends to keep the organization at the forefront of avionics technology.
  • Lead efforts to improve processes, tools and methodologies within the company.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards (e.g. EASA for ETSO projects or other relevant authorities in case of Custom Design) addressing all safety aspects and ensuring alignment with airworthiness requirements.
  • Collaborate closely and proactively with the Airworthiness Office to define the certification programme, prepare the Compliance Check List (CCL) and manage other certification related tasks for ETSO projects.
