Job Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) seeks an Assistant Area Engineer in the San Angelo Area Office to oversee construction and maintenance activities across seven of the district's fifteen counties.


Essential Duties


  • Assist the Area Engineer in projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project.

  • Respond to emergency situations to assist with office activities.

  • Conduct pre‑construction, employee forum and safety meetings.

  • Inspect roads, monitor maintenance activities and coordinate scheduling of maintenance with construction projects.

  • Stay abreast of transportation design innovations, laws, regulations and policies.

  • Monitor traffic control plans.

  • Plan and schedule the work of construction personnel and provide on‑job training.

  • Prepare and recommend field changes and supplemental agreements.

  • Prepare and review monthly and final estimates and construction reports.

  • Resolve public complaints.

  • Review plans prepared by office personnel; check designs, specifications and estimates.

  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science; a higher degree accepted by TX PELS.


Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Related graduate education may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.


Licenses and Certifications


  • Valid driver's license; position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer.

  • Engineers licensed in another U.S. state but not yet licensed in Texas must meet Texas requirements, obtain a Texas license within six months, and agree to this condition.

  • Preparation, review and compliance with plans, specifications and estimates.

  • Inspection methods, procedures and techniques.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations.

  • Construction engineering policies and procedures.

  • Application of engineering principles and methods.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions


  • Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs; may carry files and small tools.

  • Light work: lift up to 20 lbs; frequent lifting of objects up to 10 lbs.

  • Standing for prolonged periods.

  • Repetitive motions; substantial wrist, hand, finger movements.

  • Close visual acuity: work includes data, figures, computer screens, extensive reading.


Conditions of Employment


  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment; random drug testing may occur.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.

  • Required to work hours outside 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment and comply with safety requirements.

  • Required to work in inclement weather.


Position Information

Location: San Angelo Area Office. The role supports construction and maintenance across seven counties.


Work Schedule

Mon‑Fri, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
