ROLE

This role strengthens CSD’s capacity to operationalize climate services by building reproducible data pipelines, indicators, and APIs that connect observations, EO products and model outputs to Dataclime. The position will support compound‑event analysis, uncertainty‑aware indicators, and user‑driven dashboards, working closely with Dataclime engineers and REMHI modelling/impact teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Process and integrate Earth Observation, observational, and modelled datasets (NetCDF, GeoTIFF, raster time series) using Python in UNIX/Linux environments.
  • Design reproducible pipelines (xarray, pandas, NumPy; CDO/NCO) with rigorous metadata/versioning (Git) for scalable multi‑hazard indicators and services.
  • Publish and catalogue datasets via ERDDAP/GeoServer; expose interoperable services (OGC/API) feeding Dataclime dashboards and external clients.
  • Develop and validate indicators with attention to compound events and uncertainty; contribute to methods and documentation.
  • Co‑design indicators, product specs and UX with stakeholders; prepare technical materials and demos for workshops and training.
  • Contribute to deliverables, technical reports and (where relevant) peer‑reviewed publications; present results in meetings/conferences.
REQUIREMENTS
  • M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Earth/Environmental Sciences, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • Strong experience with Python for EO/observational and climate data processing (xarray, pandas, NumPy; Jupyter); familiarity with R is a plus.
  • Proficiency with GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS) and spatial analysis; knowledge of formats/standards (NetCDF, GeoTIFF, HDF, CSV time series).
  • Hands‑on experience with UNIX/Linux, CDO/NCO, and automated batch processing for large datasets.
  • Experience with ERDDAP/GeoServer (or similar) for data publication; basic web‑mapping literacy and API usage.
  • Knowledge of machine‑learning methods for image/time‑series classification and basic statistics for environmental applications.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills in English; Italian fluency is a plus for field/stakeholder interactions.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS
  • Experience with compound events, uncertainty quantification and indicator validation.
  • Familiarity with SAR/optical EO processing and cloud EO platforms; containerization (Docker) is a plus.
  • Database literacy (SQL/PostGIS) and API‑based data access; CI practices (GitHub Actions).
  • Experience preparing technical documentation and visual communication of results.
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The Researcher will be based in Caserta CMCC office, with flexible working arrangements according to internal policies.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
  • For outstanding profiles, we are also open to part‑time arrangements and remote work.
