Principal Consultant Private Markets Decarbonization & Energy Transition Investing Advisor

We are committed to supporting our Private Equity clients in their efforts to decarbonize their portfolio companies, creating value and investing in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our private markets Team is currently experiencing significant growth while servicing a large base of private equity infrastructure investor clients. Consultants in the Decarbonization & Energy Transition Investing team work on pioneering strategic and operational decarbonization and target setting projects at both investor and portfolio company levels.

We are seeking a Principal Consultant to join our EMEA-wide business, partnering with industry teams across ERM to develop value-creating 'Investment Grade' decarbonization plans that align with portfolio companies' needs, General Partner goals, investment outcomes, and can be implemented rapidly. The role will be based in Italy with flexible working arrangements.

The Role : The Principal Consultant will leverage existing client relationships and develop new ones within the private markets investor space. Internally, you will provide leadership that engages and motivates staff, contributing to ERM’s delivery of value-led and implementation projects.

Responsibilities : Developing strategies to pursue and secure new business opportunities, leading origination and delivery of decarbonization projects alongside client teams to develop fund plans, measure climate metrics, and improve performance for exit preparation. Collaborating with client teams to design and execute 'Investment Grade' decarbonization plans for investments, ensuring alignment with broader ESG and energy transition goals, and internal decarbonization capabilities. Leading multidisciplinary teams across ERM’s expert groups, providing guidance to translate decarbonization initiatives into sustainable business models, and supporting energy transition throughout the diligence lifecycle.

About you :

To be successful in this role, you will bring :

Fluency in English and Italian CL1. Proven experience in delivering board-ready decarbonization plans supported by detailed ROI and MACC analysis, with a focus on wider business value beyond energy savings. Experience managing decarbonization programs within private equity and infrastructure contexts, understanding operational projects, and aligning them with broader investment targets. Deep knowledge of energy efficiency, renewable procurement, low-carbon solutions, industrial decarbonization, and sustainable value chains.

Strong understanding of private equity and infrastructure investor operations, with experience guiding senior management on GHG inventories, decarbonization roadmaps, and net zero targets. Knowledge of energy transition investing, Science Based Targets, impact measurement, life cycle assessments, Scope 3 abatement, and supply chain engagement. Familiarity with standards such as TCFD, SBTi, LEED, BREEAM, IRIS+, and impact management principles is beneficial. Consulting background is preferred but not required.
