Field Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor

Responsible for the vehicle maintenance of heavy and light equipment in continental field camps and science traverses. Supervises, trains, and supports field staff working with heavy and light equipment. Hires field-based equipment technicians. Monitors labor and cost tracking associated with Field Area mechanical assets. Coordinates procurements, movements, tracking, storage, and inventory. Coordinates all off-ice trainings for field technicians. Provides equipment familiarization and training to all field staff operating field equipment. Integrates with all internal stakeholders regarding field fleet management.

Position Responsibilities

• Implement and maintain a safe workplace program, ensuring safety is the highest priority.
• Maintain and repair light vehicle and heavy equipment assets of the United States Antarctic Program.
• Set deadlines, establish work sequences, and balance workloads for effective operations.
• Hire, interview, select, and support seasonal staff and other positions as assigned.
• Analyze work accomplishments, costs, and utilization to evaluate progress and control costs.
• Ensure all employees are trained for their specific tasks.
• Work within existing project budget parameters.
• Supervise field mechanics and labor engaged in repair and upkeep of program equipment.
• Maintain vehicles and equipment according to manufacturer and industry standards.
• Determine re-supply requirements and ensure timely requisitions for supply vessel deliveries.
• Monitor ongoing work for quality, timeliness, and material control.
• Provide labor and material support to USAP field camps and stations.
• Conduct follow-up inspections on equipment as required.
• Document work, maintain records, and prepare reports.
• Handle confidential matters following management policies.
• Support metrics and provide training and orientation to subordinate employees.
• Maintain relationships with Fleet Management and McMurdo Operations, supporting initiatives and standards.
• Track data related to metrics accurately and honestly.
• Support achievement of ASC metrics.
• Comply with Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance requirements.
• Perform other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses

• Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience; technical school training preferred.
• US Driver's license required.
• Minimum six years’ vehicle maintenance experience and three years supervisory experience.

Expected Skills and Competencies

• Excellent communication skills.
• Experience implementing training programs and hiring employees.
• Fleet maintenance or management experience preferred.

Field Area Requirements

• Experience with heavy equipment in polar environments preferred.
• Ability to work in remote, harsh conditions, including extreme cold.
• Experience with expeditionary outdoor work and logistics planning for remote camps or traverses supported by heavy equipment.

Physical and Other Requirements

• Willingness to deploy and work in extreme cold, sleeping in unheated tents.
