Strategic Operation & Packaging is part of J&J Innovative Medicine supply chain, a global organization responsible for supplying medicines to markets around the world. With Quality as their primary focus, this group strives to provide access and affordability through innovation and strong collaboration with their R&D and Commercial partners to deliver life-changing solutions for patients in need.

J&J Innovative Medicine supply chain (JJIMSC) is recruiting for a Senior Packaging Engineer to be part of the Strategic Operation & Packaging department, within the Manufacturing Science and Technologies organization.

The Senior Packaging Engineer will be responsible for providing temperature control qualification, distribution studies, shipping route verification, and other packaging-related SME support to J&J Innovative Medicine Supply Chain (JJIMSC).

In this position, she/he will lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop, test, qualify, leverage, and commercialize passive solutions (including cold, frozen, and cryogenic shipping solutions) for both new products and lifecycle management, while ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and JJSC guidelines.

She/he will also provide secondary and tertiary packaging engineering support for new product launches, technical transfers, and lifecycle management-related activities/projects for all JJIM internal and external packaging sites, as applicable.

General Responsibilities

  • Lead / drive activities related to Transportation Study: Physical / Simulated Distribution Testing and Temperature Control (Cold Chain) Qualification activities.
  • Support product protection (physical and / or simulated) and cold chain distribution testing, packaging line trials, packaging equipment / material qualifications, child resistant requirements, human factor studies, and patient-centric design.
  • Support Shipping Route verification (SRV) activities, as required.
  • Provide day-to-day secondary and distribution (tertiary) packaging material support to the supply chain.
  • Support lifecycle packaging equipment, process technology transfer, and new product launch technical activities, including Commissioning and Qualification (C&Q) and Process Performance Validation (PPV / PPQ).
  • Provide technical support for packaging quality and compliance investigations, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Identify and deliver cost improvement or avoidance projects, and support efficiency initiatives across packaging sites.
  • Design and develop secondary and distribution packages considering equipment performance, process compatibility, and end-user preferences.
  • Establish collaborations within JJIMSC teams and external partners for product introduction and technical transfers.
  • Drive development and implementation of advanced packaging technologies for all locations.
  • Optimize design, processes, and technical platforms to meet current and future needs, with knowledge of packaging materials, equipment, and testing.
  • Manage project and program costs and schedules.
  • Support sustainability and environmentally friendly packaging initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or similar technical/engineering discipline.
  • Minimum six years of experience in cold chain, packaging, labeling, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with Passive Shipping Solutions, secondary & tertiary packaging materials & designs, and distribution testing.
  • Knowledge of packaging equipment, materials, and process validation/qualification preferred.
  • Experience in regulated environments such as pharma, biologics, or medical devices preferred.
  • Knowledge of cGMP is required.
  • Ability to lead in a global, matrix environment and communicate effectively across all levels.
  • Project Management, Lean Six Sigma, or other certifications are a plus.

Location: Latina (IT), Schaffhausen (SW), Titusville (US), or worldwide, with a preference for EMEA region.

Languages: Fluent in English; additional languages a plus.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions: International environment, travel min. 10%.
