Job summary

Arun Engineering is seeking a skilled VMC Operator to join our production team in Chennai. You will operate Vertical Machining Centres to meet production targets, ensure dimensional accuracy, and uphold delivery schedules.

Responsibilities include reading engineering drawings, setting work and tool offsets, monitoring tool wear, performing first-piece and in-process inspections, and coordinating with programmers and quality teams.

Qualifications

• ITI or Diploma in mechanical/production/tool & die or related discipline.
• 3–7 years of VMC/CNC machining experience.
• Reading engineering drawings and GD&T basics.
• 5S and shop-floor discipline.

1. Job Purpose

To operate Vertical Machining Centres (VMC) efficiently and safely, ensuring production targets, dimensional accuracy, quality standards and delivery schedules are achieved.

2. Key Responsibilities

Machine Operation

• Operate VMC machines for machining aluminium castings, components and precision parts.
• Read and understand engineering drawings, job cards and machining instructions.
• Make minor offset corrections based on inspection results.es and work holding devices.
• Set work offsets, tool offsets and coordinate systems.
• Monitor machining operations and ensure smooth machine performance.
• Carry out tool changes and tool wear monitoring.
• Make minor offset corrections based on inspection results.
• Maintain required production cycle times.

CNC Program Handling

• Load and execute CNC programs in the machine controller.
• Understand basic G-code and M-code.
• Verify programs before production and identify potential machining issues.
• Make approved minor program/offset adjustments when required.
• Coordinate with the programmer/setter for program corrections and improvements.

Quality Control

• Inspect components using vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges and other measuring instruments.
• Perform first-piece, in-process and final inspection as required.
• Ensure dimensions are within drawing tolerances.
• Identify machining defects such as:
  
  • Wrong dimensions
  • Burrs
  • Surface-finish issues
  • Tool marks
  • Incorrect holes
  • Chatter
  • Tool breakage
• Immediately report quality deviations to the supervisor/quality department.

Tool & Fixture Management

• Handle cutting tools, inserts, drills, end mills, reamers and other tooling properly.
• Monitor tool life and replace worn/damaged tools.
• Ensure correct fixture loading and component clamping.
• Check fixture condition and report fixture-related problems.

3. Required Technical Skills

The candidate should have practical knowledge of:

• VMC operation

• Tool selection and tool wear monitoring

4. Preferred Experience

Experience in machining:

• Aluminium castings
• Automotive components
• Engine components
• Pump / valve components
• Precision machined components
• Prototype and development components

Experience with Fanuc / Mitsubishi / Siemens CNC controllers will be preferred.

5. Reporting

Reports To: Production Supervisor / CNC In-charge / Production Manager

Coordinates With: Quality, Tool Room, Maintenance, PPC and CNC Programming teams.

3+ years of hands-on VMC operating experience, preferably in aluminium casting/component machining, with good knowledge of drawing reading, measuring instruments, tool offsets, fixture loading, tool wear monitoring and basic CNC troubleshooting.
