Vice President-Product Control
- Product Control is part of Controllership. Product Control ensures traded products are fair valued, correctly accounted and disclosed with prudent valuations, reported to our regulators. PC Accounting Control support London, New York, Honk Kong, Paris, Ring Fence Bank, MENA and Holding entities.
- The Product Control team structure is aligned to the Markets trading groups. There are three Business aligned teams for London region (Global Debt Market, Equities and GFX/Market Treasury) and regional teams Hong Kong, Paris, New York, along with Internal Group Reconciliations, MENA and Holding entities. Each team performs BS\P&L reconciliations, Journal Posting and B/S Substantiation for the respective regions in a multi-shift set-up. The role is of a people manager focused on BS\P&L reconciliation, Journal posting and B/S Substantiation across multiple asset classes. It involves close engagement with stakeholders in the sites and near-shore teams (Krakow and Manila), local team leadership as well as senior stakeholder management in Product Control, IT, Operations & Change Management.
In this role, you will:
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities (e.g., for Business, Customers and Stakeholders; internal control environment, etc.)
- Collaborate within the team to and mentor new team members as requested by manager.
- Responsible for ensuring adherence to all HSBC policies and procedures
- Observe to internal control processes which are in place to maintain data integrity, information security, system and infrastructure access
- Ensure that instances of minimal data integrity/documentation issues are attended effectively.
- Lead and manage a team responsible for offshore activities of Product Control
- Plan and schedule project activities aligned with the project plan and ensure timely completion of milestones.
- Lead, motivate and manage a team of finance professionals considering attritions, band progression, contingencies and expectations plus act as an individual contributor as & when required.
- Manage sourcing and hiring quality people into the team both internally and externally
- Take measures to effectively manage change, plan staff contingencies and achieve cross-training
- Deliver timely and accurate daily and periodic reporting with high degree of governance and auditable controls
- Demonstrate an expert understanding of Markets business and processes
- Understand and actively engage with stakeholder needs and manage expectations
- Influence and escalating customer issues in an effective way to ensure timely resolution
- Take measures for providing timely and appropriate response to queries and requests
- Establish and meet challenging PLAs
- Observance to Group policies, audit, controls, and compliance requirements including but not limited to declaration of secrecy, data protection act, health, safety and security, information security, clear desk policy
- Take measures to continually assess the operational risks inherent in the processes, taking account of changing operating procedures, staff movements, legal and regulatory requirements, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
- Responsible for ensuring BCP (business continuity plan) is documented, agreed and tested as per agreed timelines
- Responsible for ensuring all SOPs (standard operating procedures) are in place and updated appropriately
- Responsible for ensuring Global Resourcing operating framework considering key operational risks (including people & processes) and ways to mitigate
- Manage Product control processes in accordance with the group’s FIM reporting requirements
- Participation on all strategic change initiatives including various projects and system/ infrastructure enhancements within Product Control.
- Identify areas for process improvement and find innovative solutions with specific focus on improving controls and reducing operational risks.
Leadership and Teamwork
- Build and maintain strong relationships with various stakeholders including Global Markets Front office, Onshore PC, Regional PC, Valuation Control, Middle office and wider Finance.
- Continue to improve the knowledge and skillset of the team and maintain a deep bench strength.
- Drive optimization of cost/headcounts for the team utilizing process excellence, automation, and standardization.
- Effective communication with the team members on organization strategy and goals required for the respective roles and responsibilities.
- Motivate, develop, reward and recognize team members in order to meet process deliverables, manage staff expectations, achieve efficiency in operations, and maintain work-life balance.
- Create an environment within the team that fosters free sharing of knowledge & ideas.
- Develop the soft skills and technical competency of the team by putting together a personal development plan.
- Ensuring that within the team there is succession planning, talent management, performance management, and improved employee engagement
To be successful you will:
Functional Knowledge
- Chartered Accountant or equivalent accounting qualification, MBA (Finance) from a leading management institution with at least 15+ years of experience
- Experience required in people management and team leadership
- Strong accounting knowledge, including exposure to IFRS accounting.
- Team management / people management experience will be required.
- Experience in managing high end Accounting or Reporting & Analysis or finance and accounting activities
- Experience in reconciling & substantiating traded markets products e.g. FX, fixed income, equities and derivatives
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Exposure to diverse/multi-culture work environments with strong organization, time management and prioritization skills
- Technically proficient in systems and in MS Office, particularly Excel. Knowledge of other platforms such as PC Portal, TLM, DUCO, Cadency, Saracen, AI based tools (Altryx, Co-pilot) would be advantageous.
- Experience in Six Sigma/Lean methodology will be an advantage
- Comfortable working in a team which operates across multiple shifts, from HK to NY
- Commercial mindset and ability to drive efficiency & change.
- Very good written English and oral communication skills.
- Excellent analytical skills and a proactive approach to problem solving.
Others
- Professional qualification such as CPA, CFA and FRM will be an added advantage.
- Establish and maintain effective relationship with business areas and identify areas of service improvements by implementing regular calls and feedback mechanism.
- Influence and elevate key customer issues in an effective way to ensure timely resolution.
- Continuous reviews of the customer issues and ensure products and services are tailored on an on-going basis to meet expectation.
- Engage with Front office timely and address their concerns.
- Represent your Site/ Region at various forums like Oversight, KPI, Project calls etc.
Desirable:
- Understanding and/or experience in Treasury business
- Understanding and/or experience in Hedge Accounting
- Experience with accounting controls for Financial Instruments
- Knowledge and experience with a programming language (i.e. VBA, Python, SQL, C++, etc)
- Excellent communication skills in English (both written and verbal)
