Job summary

BNY is seeking a Vice President, Mainframe Engineer to lead complex mainframe initiatives in Pune. You will design, develop, test, and optimize critical COBOL-based applications, collaborate with global teams, and mentor junior developers.

This role emphasizes DevOps, security, and regulatory compliance while enabling modernization efforts. The position requires extensive mainframe experience, strong problem solving, and the ability to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions

Qualifications

  • 10+ years mainframe development experience.
  • Proficiency in COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM and CICS.
  • Experience with VSAM, MQ Series.
  • Familiarity with Endevor, Git, or other source control tools.
  • Exposure to mainframe DevOps practices and API enablement.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized technical expertise in mainframe systems development and support, contributing to critical financial services applications.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, and VSAM, MQ.
  • Write and optimize batch jobs, stored procedures, and online transactions.
  • Perform code reviews, unit testing, and debugging.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and provide root cause analysis.
  • Support application deployments and release activities.
  • Monitor system performance and recommend optimizations.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for critical system support.
  • Work with business analysts to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Coordinate with infrastructure teams on environment setup and capacity needs.
  • Support QA teams with test data preparation and defect resolution.
  • Mentor junior developers and share technical knowledge.
  • Participate in mainframe DevOps initiatives (CI/CD, automated testing).
  • Identify opportunities for code optimization and technical debt reduction.
  • Contribute to coding standards and best practices documentation.
  • Support modernization efforts including API enablement.
  • Follow change management and release procedures.
  • Adhere to security policies and coding standards.
  • Support audit requests and compliance documentation.

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:
  • 10+ years mainframe development experience
  • Proficiency in COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM and CICS
  • Experience with VSAM, MQ Series
  • Understanding of batch processing and online transaction systems
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skillsBachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Financial services industry experience
  • Familiarity with Endevor, Git, or other source control tools
  • Exposure to mainframe DevOps practices
  • Knowledge of REXX, Assembler
