Job summary

Qualifications

In this role, you will:

• Personally design, build, test and support production-quality full stack applications and shared services. Lead the implementation of complex components while remaining an active contributor to the codebase.
• Act as a senior technical authority within the function, providing informed guidance across software architecture, cloud engineering, application development and the wider technology landscape.
• Shape the architecture and evolution of the platform, including shared services, application onboarding patterns, integration standards, developer experience and operational controls.
• Develop backend systems using Python and Java, selecting patterns and technologies according to the performance, reliability and maintainability needs of each service.
• Build modern frontend applications using React, Next.js and TypeScript or JavaScript.
• Design robust, scalable distributed systems using appropriate patterns, including microservices and event-driven architecture.
• Make and document significant architecture and engineering decisions, balancing immediate delivery with long-term sustainability.
• Diagnosing complex production, performance and integration issues, identify root causes and drive effective solutions.
• Conduct detailed code, design and architecture reviews and ensure that agreed engineering standards are applied consistently.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical direction across teams and locations while explaining complex decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

To be successful you will:

• Extensive commercial software-engineering experience, including recent hands-on development of complex production systems. Expert-level production experience in both Python and Java, with deep knowledge of language fundamentals, testing, performance and maintainability.
• Strong hands-on experience with React and TypeScript or JavaScript, including the design and delivery of production frontend applications. Proven experience designing and implementing secure, resilient distributed systems using well-designed APIs, microservices and event-driven architecture where appropriate.
• Experience designing or evolving extensible application platforms, developer platforms, marketplaces or comparable ecosystems that support multiple applications and engineering teams. Strong hands-on cloud architecture and engineering experience, preferably on Google Cloud Platform, covering areas such as compute, networking, identity, data services, observability and cost management.
• Production experience with containerization and orchestration, CI/CD pipelines, relational and NoSQL databases, security, observability and reliable production operations. Evidence of leading important architecture and engineering decisions, raising standards through rigorous reviews and mentoring, while continuing to contribute directly to implementation.
• Broad technical judgement across architecture, cloud, application security, networking, data, integration and DevOps, together with the ability to diagnose difficult issues and communicate decisions clearly. Experience in financial services, financial markets, treasury or another highly regulated environment.
• Experience with additional systems languages or platforms, such as C++, Go or Rust. Familiarity with data science, analytics, machine learning or statistical modelling.
• Experience with Dash or comparable data-focused user-interface frameworks. Experience providing technical leadership across distributed or multi-location engineering teams.
