Job summary

DNEG is seeking an Unreal TD to design, develop and deliver artist tools and integrate Unreal with our proprietary pipeline. You will serve as the Unreal technical contact and collaborate with production stakeholders to optimize workflows for a global VFX and feature animation studio.

Join a multi-site team leveraging Unreal Engine and other real-time tech to support complex projects, with opportunities to influence production processes and tooling across departments.

Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of Unreal Editor, Unreal Engine, Blueprints and Perforce.
  • Extensive programming experience in C++ and Python.

Job description

Job Description / Key Purpose of the Job:

The Technology department at DNEG is responsible for creating and supporting the technology used by our artists and the software infrastructure required by a multi-site, global studio. With multiple film projects running in parallel, from the project's initial design, to production and post-production, there are complex problems, which arise through thousands of artists producing tens of thousands of shots and sharing assets.

As an Unreal TD, you will be helping to drive how we can leverage Realtime software such as Epic’s Unreal Engine to meet the varying needs of Feature Animation.

You will also be collaborating with production stakeholders and other members of the Technology group to develop efficient workflows and new technologies to maximize its impact on our production processes.

Key Responsibilities / Job Duties

You will be required to:

  • Design, develop and deliver tools for artists across various disciplines
  • Create methods for integrating Unreal with DNEG’s proprietary pipeline
  • Act as a technical point of contact for Unreal
  • Collaborate with key production stakeholders in an agile development environment.
  • Collaborate with other developers within Technology on how to best leverage Unreal
  • Write technical documentation and workflow guides for artists and developers to use
  • Validate your work with methodical and rigorous testing.
  • Ensure that bug reports and support requests are dealt with swiftly and efficiently
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, attending department meeting and providing support to artists and peers
  • Provide operational support for film projects using these tools
Job Requirements / Must Haves

Must have:

  • A solid understanding of Unreal Editor, Unreal Engine, Blueprints, C++ APIs and Perforce
  • Extensive programming experience in C++ & Python
  • Experience with source control systems and team development
  • Experience with Linux and Windows
  • Industry experience in VFX, Feature Animation or Games
  • Confident in navigating ambiguity and providing solutions when problem solving
  • Be proactive and work with initiative, and comfortable with working in an agile environment with multiple priorities
  • Has thorough understanding of and contributes to maintaining coding standards
Additional Skills / Nice to Have

Nice to have:

  • Experience developing artist tools for multiple platforms, namely Windows and Linux
  • Experience with Virtual Production, VFX and Feature Animation tools and workflows
  • Experience with multi-user Unreal development
  • Experience developing VR/AR iOS apps
  • Experience leading development projects including but not limited to scoping, prototyping, delegating etc.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field
  • Familiarity with VFX software packages, such as Houdini, Maya, Nuke, Solaris or Katana
