Job summary

The University of York seeks a capable lab manager/science support for the Smith Lab in Biology. You will lead technical, scientific and managerial tasks across research projects, ensuring smooth operations and data quality.

You will supervise imaging‑based workflows, coordinate personnel, maintain equipment and drive collaborations. Opportunities exist for dissemination, outreach and training across projects.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree and extensive relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology, immunofluorescence, advanced microscopy, neuronal culture and biochemical methods.
  • Experience in rat primary neuronal dissections.
  • Experience using and developing super-resolution imaging approaches.
  • Ability to analyze complex super-resolution imaging data with MATLAB and ImageJ.

Role Description

Role

You will join the Smith Lab, supervised by Prof. Kate Smith, and provide technical, scientific and managerial support for the lab and our research projects, through which we seek to understand how inhibitory synapses function and undergo plasticity. You will manage the lab, maintain our equipment, train and lead a team of researchers and manage collaborations. You will lead projects that extensively rely on super-resolution microscopy and advanced analysis pipe-lines.

A variety of imaging (including super-resolution microscopy), biochemical, molecular biological and electrophysiological methods will be used. Primary neuronal cultures and brain slices will be used. There will be opportunities for science presentation, communication and outreach activities.

Skills, Experience & Qualification Needed
  • Undergraduate degree and extensive relevant experience,
  • Extensive knowledge of molecular biology, immunofluorescence, advanced microscopy, primary neuronal culture and biochemical methods to investigate synapse function.
  • Experience in performing rat primary neuronal dissections
  • Experience using, applying and developing super-resolution imaging approaches
  • Ability to analyze complex super-resolution imaging data with Matlab and ImageJ programs
