Job summary

Summer Madras in Chennai is seeking a skilled Technical Designer to translate design sketches into production-ready garments and patterns. You will work with designers, sampling, and production teams across pattern development, fittings, specifications and construction.

You will oversee pattern making, grading, and tech packs, ensuring accurate measurements and diligent documentation from concept to production-ready samples.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Fashion Design, Pattern Making, Garment Technology or related field.
• Strong knowledge of manual and/or digital pattern drafting, pattern correction and pattern grading.
• Excellent understanding of garment construction, fit, measurements and finishing.
• Able to translate fashion sketches into technically viable garments.

Responsibilities

Job description

Summer Madras is looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Technical Designer to join our team in Chennai.

This is a hands-on technical role responsible for translating the design team’s ideas into accurate, production-ready garments. You will work closely with our designers, sampling team and production teams across pattern development, fittings, specifications and garment construction.

We’re looking for someone with a strong understanding of pattern making, garment construction, fit and sizing who can take ownership of a garment from the designer’s initial sketch through to an approved production-ready pattern.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret designers’ sketches and design intent and translate them into technically accurate garments.
• Draft and develop patterns for womenswear across different garment categories and fabrications.
• Work closely with designers to determine appropriate garment construction, proportions, measurements and finishing techniques.
• Create and maintain accurate measurement specifications and technical information within tech packs.
• Update tech packs throughout the development process with construction details, measurements, fit comments and other relevant technical information.
• Conduct sample fittings,identify fit and construction issues and recommend appropriate corrections.
• Accurately take and record garment spec measurements and ensure samples conform to approved specifications.
• Make necessary pattern corrections following fittings and sample reviews.
• Grade approved patterns across the required size range,maintaining intended fit and proportions across sizes.
• Work closely with pattern masters, tailors, sampling and production teams to communicate technical requirements and resolve construction issues.
• Review pre-production and production samples where required to ensure consistency with approved fit and specifications.
• Maintain organised digital records of patterns, specifications, fit comments and technical documentation.

What We’re Looking For

• Degree, diploma or relevant professional training in Fashion Design, Pattern Making, Garment Technology or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of manual and/or digital pattern drafting, pattern correction and pattern grading.
• Excellent understanding of garment construction, fit, balance, measurements and finishing.
• Ability to accurately interpret fashion design sketches and translate creative ideas into technically viable garments.
• Experience conducting fittings and confidently identifying and resolving fit issues.
• High level of accuracy when taking garment measurements and maintaining specification sheets.
• Experience creating, reading and updating garment tech packs.
• Comfortable using pattern drafting / CAD software.
• Comfortable working with Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Strong organisational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with both creative and production teams.
• A strong work ethic, sense of ownership and ability to follow developments through to completion.
