Job summary

Isha Foundation is seeking a passionate Carnatic Music Teacher to join our team in Coimbatore. You will plan and deliver structured Carnatic lessons, nurture students’ musical abilities and foster learning rooted in Indian traditions.

The role requires strong Carnatic vocal skills, several years of training, and experience teaching various age groups. You will create progressive learning programmes and contribute to cultural activities.

Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in Carnatic vocal music.
  • 5–7 years of dedicated training under a Carnatic guru.
  • Experience teaching children, adolescents and/or young adults.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Carnatic vocal music to students of varying ages and levels.
  • Develop structured lesson plans covering swaras, alankaras, geethams, varnams, kritis, theory, tala.
  • Adapt teaching methods to individual pace and ability.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Build understanding of raga, tala, swara, rhythm and Carnatic theory.
  • Encourage disciplined and consistent practice habits.
  • Prepare students for performances, assessments and cultural programmes.
  • Introduce students to devotional dimensions of Indian classical music.
  • Maintain a positive, disciplined classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and programme coordinators.
  • Contribute to events and cultural activities organized by the institution.

Job description

We are looking for a passionate and accomplished Carnatic Music Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in Carnatic music, a genuine interest in teaching, and the ability to inspire students across different age groups and levels of musical proficiency.

The role involves planning and delivering structured Carnatic music lessons, nurturing students' musical abilities, and creating an engaging learning environment rooted in Indian musical traditions and values.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach Carnatic vocal music to students across different age groups and learning levels.
  • Develop structured lesson plans covering swaras, alankaras, geethams, varnams, kritis, theory, tala and regular practice routines.
  • Adapt teaching methods based on individual students' age, learning pace and musical ability.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback and personalised guidance.
  • Develop students' understanding of raga, tala, swara, rhythm and Carnatic music theory.
  • Encourage students to develop disciplined and consistent practice habits.
  • Prepare students for performances, assessments and cultural programmes, as required.
  • Introduce students to the traditional and devotional dimensions of Indian classical music.
  • Maintain a positive, disciplined and engaging classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and programme coordinators to support students' overall development.
  • Contribute to music-related events, performances and cultural activities organised by the institution.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Strong proficiency in Carnatic vocal music.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of dedicated training under a qualified Carnatic music guru.
  • Prior experience teaching children, adolescents and/or young adults.
  • Strong knowledge of Carnatic music fundamentals, ragas, talas, swaras and theory.
  • Ability to teach students from beginner to advanced levels.
  • Experience in music schools, residential schools, cultural institutions, gurukuls or performing arts academies will be an added advantage.
  • Formal qualifications in Carnatic music will be an advantage but are not mandatory where demonstrated expertise is strong.
Preferred Skills
  • Excellent vocal technique and musical expression.
  • Strong teaching and presentation skills.
  • Ability to create structured and progressive learning programmes.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience and empathy when working with young learners.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • Familiarity with devotional and temple music will be an added advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of music notation and music education methodologies is preferred.
