Job Context & Major Challenges

Hindalco Industries Limited operates 4 bauxite mines across the Lohardaga cluster in Chhattisgarh. Bagru plateau in the Lohardaga cluster, with composite deposit of bauxite, has 2 operating mines (4 leases) about 20 km from Lohardaga. The Bagru mines cater to alumina refineries at Muri and Renukoot. Besides transporting bauxite through tippers by road, bauxite is shipped through train from the railway siding at Lohardaga which gets bauxite through an aerial ropeway from the Bagru mines. Once mining plan is finalised in collaboration with the Geological department and approved by the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), mining operation is undertaken at the mines primarily through contractual manpower. Laterite is removed, bauxite is drilled, excavated through excavators and dumped through dumpers and unloaded in crusher hover or in bauxite stock room. At the end of the mining lifecycle, the waste is removed and used in back filling of closed mine pits and making them ready for plantation through horticulture contract.

This is a statutory position. The role is responsible for measuring excavation area and submitting surface plan, geological plan, water danger plan to DGMS on a quarterly basis showing progress of excavation. It is critical to ensure measurement of length, breadth, width of excavated area and conduct proper risk analysis to ensure complete accuracy.

Another important element of the role is to estimate over burden, top soil, laterite over bauxite area and arrange for their removal through contractor. Close coordination with the contractor to check whether all resources in terms of manpower and equipment are being deployed and work is progressing as per plan. Criticality is to keep track of progress of work on the ground to ensure completion of tasks within deadline to make the mine ready for bauxite excavation and ensure payment as per actual work done. In view of the large contingents of contractual workers deployed for this process, contract labour management is a critical element of the role.

This role is required to undertake creation of green belt particularly for rehabilitation of mines. Water management through rain water harvesting is also an important element of the role. It involves dealing with the local community sometimes.

• geological plan
• water danger plan
• Implementing compliance of Integrated Management system and Energy Management System
• Overseeing good Housekeeping practices in area under jurisdiction
• Partnering in green initiatives

6) Safety

• Implementing Safety standards to achieve zero harm through implementation of safety standards such as LOTOTO, HIRA, 5S
• Monitoring implementation of safety related training

7) People development and engagement

• Monitoring intake and deployment of physically fit and appropriately trained contractual workforce and ensuring their continuous training and wellbeing as per company guidelines.
• Monitoring implementation of contract management.
