Job description

The Surgical Oncologist will be responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and surgically managing cancer patients through evidence-based oncology care. This involves performing cancer surgeries, biopsy procedures, tumor resections, staging assessments, postoperative care, and multidisciplinary treatment planning. The candidate should have strong surgical expertise, oncology knowledge, ethical clinical judgment, and compassionate communication skills to deliver safe, precise, and patient-centered cancer treatment within a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients with suspected or confirmed cancer and determine surgical treatment suitability.
• Plan and perform oncology-related surgical procedures as per diagnosis, staging, and clinical guidelines.
• Conduct tumor resections, biopsies, lymph node dissections, and cancer staging procedures when required.
• Review imaging reports, pathology reports, biopsy findings, tumor markers, and staging investigations.
• Develop individualized surgical care plans in coordination with multidisciplinary oncology teams.
• Coordinate with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, anesthetists, and nursing teams.
• Explain surgical options, risks, benefits, expected outcomes, and recovery plans to patients and families.
• Obtain informed consent and ensure patients understand the surgical procedure and postoperative care.
• Monitor patients before and after surgery to identify complications and ensure safe recovery.
• Provide inpatient rounds, OPD consultations, emergency surgical assessments, and follow-up care.
• Participate in tumor board meetings and contribute to comprehensive cancer treatment planning.
• Ensure proper documentation of clinical findings, operative notes, consent forms, and discharge plans.
• Follow hospital protocols for surgical safety, infection control, antibiotic usage, and patient care standards.
• Support palliative surgical care and symptom-relief procedures for advanced cancer patients when needed.
• Contribute to oncology department growth, clinical audits, patient safety initiatives, and continuous medical education.
