Job summary

FedEx Logistics seeks a seasoned Ocean Freight Manager to lead an express/forwarding cargo initiative in Mumbai. You will oversee day-to-day operations, shape the ocean strategy, and drive profitable growth across Asia, Europe, and the US.

You will partner with commercial and operations teams, manage P&L, and steer procurement activities, RFIs/RFQs, and contract negotiations to secure capacity and service excellence.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in an Ocean freight role in Supply Chain / Freight Forwarding / Logistics.
  • Experience negotiating short, medium and long‑term deals, SLAs, and managing supplier relationships.
  • Knowledge of ocean markets across Asia, Europe and the US and ability to guide strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all day-to-day operational activities for this initiative and ensure forwarding compliance with SOP and fulfillment of commitments.
  • Liaise with carriers on capacities, ensuring BSA fulfillment and service commitment compliance.
  • Work with forwarding and express operational management on project scope changes, performance monitoring, and revisions to SOP and process flows.
  • Continuously assess project P&L and identify operational and commercial improvements.
  • Volume and P&L responsibility as per FY targets year‑over‑year.
  • Drive profitable and sustainable business growth and develop an Ocean freight strategy aligned with regional/global guidelines.

Job description

This is a managerial position for a joint express/forwarding cargo movement initiative with expanding volume and responsibilities. The candidate will manage all operational activities for this project on behalf of the forwarding team and serve as the main operational management interface to the operations management team. This will require the candidate to have a thorough knowledge of Ocean operations, and the role will evolve to include additional Ocean operations responsibilities beyond this joint express/forwarding initiative after the initial stages. The Ocean Product will be responsible to provide a sustainable service platform for existing customers and drive Ocean growth through providing guidance as the subject‑matter Ocean Product expert. Carrier and Allocation Management, in line with the global and regional guidelines and strategy, will be responsible for the Ocean profit and volume targets.

Key Responsibilities and Qualifications
  • Manage all day‑to‑day operational activities for this initiative and ensure forwarding compliance with SOP and fulfillment of commitments.
  • Liaise with carriers on capacities, ensuring BSA fulfillment and service commitment compliance.
  • Work with forwarding and express operational management on project scope changes, performance monitoring, measurement, and revisions to SOP and process flows.
  • Continuously assess project P&L and identify areas of improvement both operationally and commercially.
  • Volume and P&L responsibility as per FY targets year‑over‑year.
  • Extensive experience in an Ocean freight role in Supply Chain / Freight Forwarding / Logistics, ideally from within industry, with the ability to motivate the teams.
  • Experience in supporting the commercial organization by conducting new business and retention calls with salespeople.
  • Ability to provide market intelligence to the commercial organization for product growth.
  • Drive profitable and sustainable business growth.
  • Ability to create and develop an Ocean freight strategy with an interpretation of the locations’ Ocean strategy.
  • Expert level understanding and knowledge of Ocean freight, including trades such as Asia, Europe, and the US.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the marketplace and financial management processes including job costing, console profitability, financial forecasting, reporting and budgeting.
  • Significant experience negotiating short, medium and long‑term deals, SLAs, and managing complex supplier relationships.
  • Expert level ability to assess commercial / business risk versus reward with effective and decisive decision‑making.
  • Direct experience with structured buying processes such as RFIs, RFQs, e‑tenders, multiple tender rounds and other procurement techniques.
  • Experience in the maintenance and management of rate & contract database/files.
