Position Summary
Payroll Tax Specialist is responsible for federal, state and local tax compliance, research, and filing within the Professional Employer Organization (PEO) industry.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Research legal issues, concerns, solutions and filing positions in compliance with local, federal and international tax laws.
- Coordinate with departments on new projects or businesses to ensure proper tax liability coverage.
- Assist in the audit of all corporate tax payments.
- Process payroll tax payments and returns, including reconciliations.
- Verify data for accuracy to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
- Resolve tax notices and discrepancies by analyzing information and processing corrections in a timely and effective manner.
- Provide high‑level customer service and support to clients regarding payroll tax issues, questions or requests.
- Maintain professional payroll‑tax knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications, internal resources, and researching payroll law at the federal, state, and local level.
- Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll tax returns for federal, state and local taxes.
- Process tax filings and payments via e‑file, batch agent files, mag media, and EFT debit/credit.
- Resolve tax notices while maintaining timely status updates in the case‑management system.
- Prioritize and resolve assigned tasks in the case‑management system.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.

- Strong analytical, organizational and proactive approach.
- Critical thinking with attention to detail.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with strong customer‑service skills.
Education & Experience
- Certified Payroll Professional certification (CPP) or Fundamentals of Payroll Certification (FPC) preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of payroll‑tax experience.
- PEO or related industry experience preferred.
