Position Summary

Payroll Tax Specialist is responsible for federal, state and local tax compliance, research, and filing within the Professional Employer Organization (PEO) industry.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Research legal issues, concerns, solutions and filing positions in compliance with local, federal and international tax laws.
  • Coordinate with departments on new projects or businesses to ensure proper tax liability coverage.
  • Assist in the audit of all corporate tax payments.
  • Process payroll tax payments and returns, including reconciliations.
  • Verify data for accuracy to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Resolve tax notices and discrepancies by analyzing information and processing corrections in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide high‑level customer service and support to clients regarding payroll tax issues, questions or requests.
  • Maintain professional payroll‑tax knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications, internal resources, and researching payroll law at the federal, state, and local level.
  • Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll tax returns for federal, state and local taxes.
  • Process tax filings and payments via e‑file, batch agent files, mag media, and EFT debit/credit.
  • Resolve tax notices while maintaining timely status updates in the case‑management system.
  • Prioritize and resolve assigned tasks in the case‑management system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Results‑oriented with ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and proactive approach.
  • Critical thinking with attention to detail.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with strong customer‑service skills.
Education & Experience
  • Certified Payroll Professional certification (CPP) or Fundamentals of Payroll Certification (FPC) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of payroll‑tax experience.
  • PEO or related industry experience preferred.
