Job summary

MetLife is seeking a Senior full-stack engineer to design, develop, implement and maintain solutions for Disability & Absence products. You will work across UI, backend, databases, APIs, and DevOps, employing React or Angular with Java, SQL and No-SQL databases, Kubernetes, and scripting.

You will mentor teams, develop architectures, estimate delivery plans, and participate in design reviews. Experience with cloud platforms (GCP/Azure/AWS) and distributed systems is essential for this role.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of delivery on large, complex projects with demonstrated technical leadership.
• End-to-end system design balancing technical solution, business value and operational simplicity.
• Hands-on development in JavaScript (React or Angular), Java, OOP, SQL, JSON; No-SQL (MongoDB, CosmosDB); Kubernetes; scripting.
• Experience developing CRUD APIs and critical applications from the ground up.
• Experience with Queues/Kafka, microservices, message brokers, integration patterns.
• Experience deploying applications using GCP or Azure or AWS solutions.
• Advanced knowledge of software engineering principles, system analysis and design, algorithms, data structures.

As a Senior full-stack engineer you are responsible for the design, development, implementation and maintenance of solutions supporting Disability & Absence products at MetLife - products that provide income protection and job protection to millions of employees across the United States. You will collaborate closely with the Scrum Lead, Product Owner and ART Leadership. You will have an opportunity to impact every part of the system and iterate over solutions to be the very best you can be to deliver for our customers.You will be responsible for thought leadership, creative problem solving, and applying your expertise in a complex environment. Your responsibilities include writing full stack code, reviewing code written by the team, design and development of systems, frameworks, applications, and APIs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Hands on development with UI, Backend, Database, APIs, DevOps. Specifically React, Java, SQL, Micro services, Azure DevOps. Similar related technologies will be an asset.
• Develop architecture and solution designs.
• Mentor, motivate, influence, drive innovation, and coach broader technical team. Provide technical and solution guidance to the team. Conduct design and code reviews for the team delivery.
• Develop iterative implementation plans and strategies. Estimate user stories, as part of release plan and participate in iteration plan exercises
• Key participant in user story breakdowns, user story elaboration, and user story reviews
• Serve as an escalation point for deployments, and change oversight, enabling highly visible business priorities.
• Responsible for developing and maintaining SRE runbooks.

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required:

• 7+ years related work experience successfully delivered on large, complex projects with demonstrated technical leadership in delivery.
• End-to-end system design that balances the tradeoffs between technical solution, business value and operational simplicity.
• Core hands-on development skills in JavaScript (React or Angular), Java, OOP, SQL, JSON, No-SQL (MongoDB, CosmosDB), Kubernetes, and Scripting.
• Experience developing CRUD APIs, and critical applications from the ground up.
• Experience with Queues/Kafka, Micro services, message brokers, integration patterns.
• Experience developing and deploying applications using GCP or Azure OR AWS solutions.
• Advanced knowledge of the principles in software engineering, system analysis and design, design and analysis of algorithms, computer system architecture, and data structures.

Preferred

• BS/MS in Comp Science/IS.
• Disability product experience or Insurance industry knowledge.
• Experience using AI/ Co-Pilot.
• Experience with Python.
• Experience working in cross-functional, multi-location teams.
• Experience in SAFe, Agile methodology, tools, and Agile integration with Waterfall.
• Experience with distributed database technologies, particularly Apache Solr, HBase, JanusGraph, and Hadoop.
• Understanding of search indexing, graph databases, and big data processing frameworks.
• Hands-on expertise in optimizing query performance, data modeling, and scalability within large-scale distributed systems.
