Job summary

Progress Software Corporation in India seeks a Software Engineer, Principal I to architect and develop OpenEdge Development Tools, leading feature evolution and performance improvements. You will drive AI-powered integrations, mentor the team, and collaborate with cross-functional groups to deliver robust, scalable solutions.

The role requires a strong Java background, experience with VS Code/Eclipse plugins, LSP/DAP, and modern web tech.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 6+ years of professional product software development experience.
• Proficient in Java; willingness to learn JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Experience developing VS Code extensions or Eclipse plugins; LSP/DAP knowledge.
• Strong web tech: HTML, CSS, JavaScript; React or Angular.
• Solid OO design, data structures, and software architecture principles.
• Strong knowledge of databases, query optimization and performance tuning.
• Hands-on with AI-assisted development tools like Copilot or ChatGPT.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, Git, and Unix/Linux/Windows.

Responsibilities

• Architect, design, and develop features for OpenEdge Development Tools.
• Lead the evolution of development features, improving performance and usability.
• Drive AI-powered feature integration within the tools ecosystem.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the development team.
• Collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, QA, and UX to deliver scalable solutions.
• Analyze and optimize performance using profiling and diagnostic tools.
• Ensure quality via automated tests, code reviews, and CI pipelines.
• Stay current with IDE tooling, AI-assisted development, and performance topics.
• Adhere to Agile practices and participate in ceremonies.

In this role, you will:

• Architect, design, and develop features related to OpenEdge Development Tools, demonstrating strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Lead the evolution of development features, enhancing performance, usability, and diagnostic capabilities.
• Drive the integration of AI-powered features within the OpenEdge Developer Tools ecosystem and understanding of RAG, MCP etc.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the development team, applying systems thinking to solve business and technical problems while ensuring adherence to best coding and design practices.
• Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Architects, QA, and UX teams to deliver robust, scalable, and user-centric solutions.
• Analyze and optimize performance issues using profiling tools and diagnostic frameworks.
• Ensure quality and maintainability through automated testing, code reviews, and continuous integration pipelines.
• Stay current with emerging technologies in IDE tooling, AI-assisted development, andperformance optimization.
• Adhere to Agile practices and methodologies, actively participating in all Agile ceremonies.

Your background:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent is required.
• 6+ years of professional experience in a product development organization, with a strong background in designing and delivering scalable, high-quality software solutions.
• Proficient in Java, with openness to learn and adopt other relevant technologies such as JavaScript and TypeScript.
• Proven experience in developing VS Code extensions or Eclipse plugins, with solid understanding of Language Server Protocol (LSP) and Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP).
• Strong foundation in web development, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, RESTful services, and modern front-end frameworks such as React or Angular.
• Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, object-oriented design, and software architecture principles.
• Strong knowledge of database concepts, query optimization, and performance tuning for scalability and reliability.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar, leveraging them to enhance productivity, testing, and documentation workflows.
• Familiarity with Node.js and modern JavaScript frameworks used in IDE tooling or developer platforms.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and version control systems such as Git.
• Expertise in profiling, diagnostics, and memory performance optimization on the JVM or similar platforms.
• Awareness of software security best practices and ability to identify, assess, and mitigate vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top 10, dependency scanning, secure coding standards).
• Experience applying static and dynamic analysis tools to ensure code and dependency security.
• Comfortable working on both Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate within cross-functional teams to design, plan, and deliver new features.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to apply systems thinking to technical and business challenges.
• Commitment to Agile practices and methodologies, actively participating in Agile ceremonies and promoting continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
